i have recieved my sustain pedal and its called proell pf224 ( if u needed the name ) and i can't figure out how to use it. I want to play fur elise iwth the broken chords in the left hand as usual sustained.
What happens if u hold it on oe note?
what about on three?
what if u just press it?

what i mean is;-
if u are playing a broken chord or arrpegio or whatever, (anything with three notes played seperatley NOT like a chords) then whats the difference between
*me pressing the pedal at the 1st note and holding it
*me pressing the pedal at the 1st note and not holding it
*me pressing the pedal at the 3rd note and holding it
*me pressing the pedal at the 3rd note and not holding it
more precisely, if i press it at the first note will it sustain all three notes or just that one? does holding it make any difference?

You press the pedal just before you want the sustaining to start. You release it when you want the sustained sound to stop.
If you want all the notes of your broken chord to be sustained, press it just before the first one. When you come to the next chord, unless you want the sustain of the first one to carry through the second one, release the pedal and press it before the first note of your second br chord. etc.

thanx for ur posts, but one more question. the problem is when i want to sustain a broken chord whilst i play some more notes (whilst the broken chord is still playing) I hold down the pedal to sustain the chord but then all the other notes that i play "ontop" of it become sustained too. Get me? and how can i make those overlapping notes NOT sustained, because when i realease it the broken chord note stops, and i want it to carry on

AH.
That's the problem and the art of pedalling. You're right. Once you press the pedal, any notes you play will sustain until you release it - includes left and right hand notes.
The way to "sustain" the LH ONLY is to hold the LH keys down (for as long as you want them to sustain - this stops the dampers shutting them off) while you play normal legato/staccato or whatever with the right hand.
Once you start to use pedal sensitively you might press it for a couple of notes at start of a broken chord while moving your hand on to the rest to give the impression of a nice sustain without interfering too much with the RH tune.
In fact, thinking about fur elise, you could press the pedal just before the broken chord (because the RH is static at that point), then release as the right hand moves up a step (via some other note if I recall) - once its static again, you can press the pedal for the next chord.
I'm trying to visualise it so I may be wrong, but you should get the idea. Grow used to just touching the pedal in here and there. Regard it like playing a note - timing usually has to be exact. Not always but if you start out thinking that way you'll get into good habits.
