I am still quite new to this system. I graduate musical school after 12 years of learning but now I have to pass Gr 6 theory...

1. How long the exam last? Is it enough time or you have to do everything very fast. How many questions there is on the paper?

2. Is there anything you have to listen to during the test, eg they play some chord and you have to write what you hear, or it is everything on the paper?
What they mean by identification in eg. "The identification of the progression (Ic-V) on the dominant note..."?

I think it is this for now. I have to look at Music Theory in Practice and then I might have more questions.

Please, help me.
Thanks in advence!

The exam last 3 hours. I would think the best thing to do is to get some past papers and then try and do them under "exam conditions" to see how long it takes you. And try and get somebody to mark them for you if possible. If not, you can buy "model answer" books instead. You can get past papers from the ABRSM shop, or from most other music shops.

No, you don't actually listen to anything. If you go to this link, you will be able to download a copy of the syllabus. Where it says that you have to analyse an extract, it will be a written extract of music, not an audio extract.

I won't try and answer that one because I haven't done Grade 6 theory yet.

Good luck with your study!

There are lots of those type questions. In the case of the one you mentioned they would expect you to hunt through the score for a Ic-V-I progression where the bass line is the dominant note (so if the key was C major then you would have the chords C/G-G-C and the bassline would be G-G-C).

They do like these types of questions! Stuff like "find an example of an inverted pedal" or "find a falling melodic interval of a major 6th".

If you haven't done any of the AB exam papers then it might be better to start with grade 5 (since you already have a music background). It is probably more a case of getting used to the style of questions in the papers.

I wouldn't be too worried about the time limit, for grade 6, I think 3 hours would be plenty, seeing as it is the same time limit for grade 8 papers! (but past papers will give you a more reliable personal perspective) I can only speak for grade 5, which is 2 hours, but I had more than an hour going spare when I finished it, and i'm no genius smile.gif
I think Skylark and Nick have answered your questions though, so good luck! smile.gif
