I have to play in a concert on new years eve, and all we are doing is strauss waltzes, overtures, and the obligotary piece it seems for this year in band, pirates of the caribbean medley (Arrr) Is anyone else doing a similar concert, if so what are your views????

i've played the strauss waltzes and pirates of the caribbean in serparate concerts. I liked pirates of the caribbean but i hated the strauss. i'm not a strauss fan, i find it all really boring.

Ah - you're both playing the wrong Strauss! Insist on doing Richard not Johann next year!

IMO J Strauss the younger's music is

1) Nicer to hear than to play and

2) Much more difficult than most people realise.

The last time I played any with an orchestra (on double bass) we spent most of the rehearsal time working out the geography: DC, DS, 1st & 2nd time nars, fine, repeats, where does the next one start? Consequently we got nowehere near the style, which is 80% of what justifies it.
