Well, the pub I used to work in and the new pub i work in are both 'real ale pubs', and i find them really interesting! At the pub i work in now, we have 8 real ale pumps on the bar and also 2 in the restaurant upstairs... I find some of the names interesting... What are some that you've come across?

One brewery thats quite creative - if thats the right word- with their names is Northumberland Brewery.

Two that make me laugh are:

'Bucking Fastard'

and

'Hoof Harted' - This one may have had a slip of the tongue when a customer asked me what beers we had on blush.gif

^^^ Customers cheated and asked for a pint of 'northumberland' please.. to which my response would be.... 'which one' tongue.gif

Top totty is a popular one, Charlies Angels, Doombar.

Oakham's we find is a popular brewery - especially Citra and Musashi!

Of course Wychwood brewery - Hobgoblin sells well!

Oh and Coach house brewery with their toffee, raspberry and other flavours sell well smile.gif

Any real ale drinkers here? And what names have you come across?

I had a pint of "Bonkers Conkers" yesterday.

Bishop's Finger is an interesting one, I often wonder where it's been.

Hmm, got a few in Cornwall. However I tried to add them and the ridiculous screening has just made it come up with lots of ###### rolleyes.gif

'Bucking Fastard'

Like Fat Fred's Cat n The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. I believe its name was Cooking Fat.

As for real ales ...

King Billy
Old Growler
Speckled Hen
Fuggles
Brewdog Paradox
Dogfish Head
Hog's Back

...

hundreds and hundreds of them

You should visit 'Bert's Bierhuis' in Utrecht

One of the local breweries has a favorite called TEA (traditional english ale). They often do a seasonal called Summer This. I know from experience that Santa's Wobble is dangerous stuff!

Ah, happy memories of our courting days...the local real ale pub used to do a fine pint of Theakston's Old Peculier.

Which is how I recall Misterjay felt after one pint too many of the stuff... laugh.gif

'Old Legover'

Go on blink.gif you are making this up!!!
fsharpminor
It is brewed by a small brewery near Harrogate.

A pub I frequent near our Horsforth office (Skylark knows it too) , has several hundred beer mats on the walls/beams etc. 'Old Legover' is definitely there. I'll have a good look tomorrow , and find some unusual ones.

Saw some yesterday from the Nelson Brewing Company -

Friggin' in the Riggin';
Powder Monkey;
Loose Cannon;
Nelson's Blood;
Shiver M' Timbers;
Shipwrecked; and
Spanker

Of course Wychwood brewery - Hobgoblin sells well!

And also by Wychwood, there's Fiddler's Elbow violin.gif

A favourite of my dad's is Tanglefoot, allegedly named after the effect it has on the drinker!

Arundodonuts
Of course there is "Old Speckled Hen". Named after an old MG.

The pub I used to work in had lots of beer pump clips all over the walls... some interesting names there!

'Riggwelter' from the Black Sheep Brewery is one of my favourites.
(A 'riggweltered' sheep is stuck on its back and unable to get up.)

I gave my aged dad a bottle of Old Git last Christmas. Fairly well known one, I think.

(My cat has often been called Cooking Fat but I've never seen that programme!)

Sounds like something typically Yorkshire !

I like beer. This is a good thread! I know lots of beers with genius names, and if you go to a festival you usually get a booklet listing all the beers - a rich source of entertainment in itself.

There are two breweries reasonably near me which seem to specialise in fun names for their beers. One has beers called This and That (and if I'm not mistaken I've seen one called T'other as well). The other is based in a village that lends its names to the range of beers - Piddle in the Hole, Piddle in the Wind, Piddle in the Snow - you get the idea! I also like Goff's beers which have a Knights of the Round Table theme. biggrin.gif

Yes they have a beer mat for that in the collection at the Town Street Tavern too. smile.gif

Ahhh one of the things I miss about England! The only draught real ale across the water here is Old Speckled Hen, although there is a small annual beer fest. And we have Morrisons, so we get a good bottled selection too...

My fave was always Everard's Tiger...but Old Peculiar has floored me on a few occasions!! (I discovered I can no longer play the violin after 5 pints.... LOL)

More than we get over in Costa Rica! sad.gif

For a while at our most upmarket supermarket we were able to get some decent lager and ale from a Qu?bec brewery, with excentric names such as Maudite ("damned"), Fin du Monde ("end of the world"), Don de Dieu ("gift from God"). No longer, sadly. And our only independent microbrewery, which made German style ales, has gone out of business. sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Too bad that all liquid now has to go in check luggage (just got home to find lovely curry sauce had leaked all over my clothes ohmy.gif )

The last time I tried to bring back a selection of interesting ales and cider (from Canada, in fact) I had the bad luck to turn up early at the airport (so hadn't seen the news) - it was the day of the UK bomb attempt that prompted control on liquids. That was the earliest tipple I've ever had, I think... and I eventually convinced a wary lady to take the rest as I just couldn't bear to throw it in the bin.

Just been in Town St. Tavern in Horsforth again.
Three new ones I hadnt heard of before:-

Pommies Revenge (Goose Eye Brewery , Keighley)
Sarahs Sweater (Mallinson Brewery , Huddersfield)
Wait Lifter (Doc Martins Brewery , Sheffield)
fsharpminor
........and yet two more new ones in Town St Tavern today.

From Little Valley Brewery, Hebden Bridge:-

Python IPA (6% abv)
Sixpence Bitter (3.7%abv)

The Sixpence was rather nice for a weakish one.

Also we sampled a bottled Belgian Beer 'Floris Passion' (3.6%abv) with added Passion Fruit flavour, quite palatable if you go for that sort of thing.

For me, a bit strong for lunchtime at 6%abv !

This week Town St Tavern has had 'Old Legover' (Daleside Brewery Knaresborough) on draught, though I admit it was mentioned in an earlier post.
Another one this week was Ilkley Brewerys 'Mary Jane' whos been courting on Ilkla Moor in the second verse of the famous Yorkshire song. This beer is also the staple on at The Chevin Hotel, Otley.
Next week I am going to be in Christchurch, Hants from Monday to Friday. What beers should I look out for down there ?
fsharpminor
In the Town St Tavern this week was

Yo Banana Boy ! (3.8% abv) from Salamander Brewery Bradford.

It doesnt contain banana, its just a pale bitter. Note that the name is palindromic !!

I thought F#m might be feeling a bit lonely in this thread so I should add that I was at the Ealing Beer Festival last night, and enjoyed:

Village Idiot
Zig Zag Stout
Taiphoon
Pitchfork and
Old Slug Porter

With 180 beers to choose from, the relative absurdity of the beer name was a useful differentiator.

Jon
fsharpminor
smile.gif Yay, thanks for the support Benjy.
fsharpminor
In the Town St tavern today:-

Bargee (Elland Brewery) 3.8% abv standard bitter with good hoppy taste
Three Swords (Kirkstall Brewery, Leeds) 4.5% premium bitter

The pub we've just stayed in in Devon had Otter Ale, the local brew, and very nice it was too.

However, their dish of Beef and Otter Ale pie confused several customers who didn't at first notice that little word 'Ale' in the title. biggrin.gif
