I'm entering a girl (age 12) for G3 Jazz this term. I've used the jazz exams before, but not for a while. As there are no published notes for the jazz pieces I wonder if you can give me some suggestions? The pieces she's playing are: Birks Works, A Smooth One and Spanish Sketch. She can play the notes, but I need to help her get them more stylistic. We're working with the metronome to get the pulse really secure, as she does tend to pause at some chords, and in the solos. She's not a very confident girl, she hardly talks in the lessons and when she does it's in a monotone, and much of her playing is the same. Due to this I do find her rather hard to teach. She's excellent on the quick studies and aural, which will help her get a secure pass, but I'd like to push the standard of the pieces up and increase her confidence. Any suggestions please?
