I am so stuck with my music work, can some one tell me if I have finally got it right?

I have got:
Prime: C# E F D D# B Bb A G# F# C G (we were given this to work from)

I worked out:
Retrograde: G C F# G# A Bb D# D F E C#

Inversion (the bit that has so far taken 6 attempts): C# Bb A C B D# E F G# C# D# G# - This can't be right, as I have somehow ended up with two C#'s and 2 D#'s and 2 G#'S

Retrograde Inversion: G# D# C# G# F E D# B C A Bb C#

I'm really confused with the inversion bit, on the first attempt I got the 3rd note wrong, throwing the whole thing out by 2 semitones...

I tried it out and came up with C#, Bb, A, C, B, Eb, E, F, F#, G#, D and G for the inversion. I think you might have made a mistake after the F natural - the next note in the series should be a semitone up from this

I'm not completely sure I'm correct, but all 12 pitches are used

Helen,

May I enquire if you're at school or university/music college?

I get same result as jstark.

Rhapsodin: I'm at A level college. smile.gif I would have asked my music teachers but I was doing it in my free lesson when they were teaching.

Both of you!: Thanks guys... I just tried it again and realised where I went wrong, it was after the F. I got it now. Oh well, you what they say, the 7th attempt is the charm. rolleyes.gif (Well, they don't, but you know...)

Subatomic_star - the best way I found of dealing with these things was to write out my note row, then the intervals between each row, and take it from there.

And if you want to hear serialism in action, try Webern's Concerto for Nine Instruments. The note row is played, inverted, played retrograde, retrograde inversion, transposed...

Ah!!! Thanks. I asked because...
Were you doing a detention? I mean....do they really make people do this 12-tone stuff? A punishment, surely?

You need 12 cards of any (mixed) suit(s) - ace to queen. Assign the ace to a starting note the rest successve semitones. Shuffle the cards then spread em out - the row will sound as good as any other. Let chance take the work out of it!

Nope. No detention. I don't do detention in any way, shape or form. We had to do serialism because of that small matter of an exam at the end of the year. smile.gif

Sorry, just that I can't believe people still teach this stuff - it got nowhere and never will except as an academic exercise...I suppose it's that.

A bit like a course in medicine and having to learn alchemy...

Are you actually forced to use all 12-tones?

Oh anyway, sorry, don't mean to distract you - you asked a question it's been answered and I'll just contain my curiosity...

Why?? I have enough work to do, without key skills, let alone an extra one by choice!!
