Hi there,
After teaching myself the piano for a few months, I have reached the stage where I can no longer judge my own playing, and I am finding it hard to keep myself focused on it as I don't need to be able to play things in a specific way by a certain time (ie my lesson). I think I have reached the point where I really need a teacher.
So to my question: Where should I look for a piano teacher? I have previously looked on the internet but I have had no luck in finding anybody. I know that there are plenty of piano teachers around, but I just don't know where to loook. Any advise?

Local music shop may keep a list.
Does anyone advertise in the local press? Just after Christmas is one of the times when teachers are likely to be advertising in this way.
Try the library too.
Have you asked your clarinet teacher if they know anyone?

If you are still at school have you tried asking the music teachers? - and anyone you know that does play the piano - it's better to get a recommendation.

I know a really good teacher... but unless you happen to live near me that's not much help. But other places to try: local papers, or if your area has any free papers (ours has a little thing full of adverts which comes out every two weeks, and I know my friend sometimes puts an ad in there). In the library they may have a noticeboard with advrets, but ours also keeps a list of local music teachers. best way is definitely personal recommendation though.

You mentioned the internet ........... have you tried
musicteachers.co.uk ?
some music shops (not our local ones though!) carry ads from music teachers, also libraries do sometimes, and local authority websites.
Hope the search turns out to be fruitful.

Another useful website is
http://www.ism.org/home.php for the Incorporated Society of Musicians. They publish a yearbook that you might find in your nearest library, but you should be able to search for registered teachers on the website too

yes, you can search on there - I just tried! you need to choose the options starting with the instrument at the top when you get to the search page and working down... if you start at region, for instance, it seems to get confused. but it's pretty good.
