This message worries me a bit if you are taking Grade 3 in February and don't know the difference between major and minor, how are you coping with the scale/arpeggio tests etc? Have you asked your teacher to explain this to you?

There are differences in the theory of major/minor keys which I won't try to explain here. In terms of sound (I presume you are thinking about the question in the 3D aural test) major has a rather happier feel to it and minor a sadder one. Listen to the difference between a major arpeggio and minor - it's the pitch of the 3rd note that is critical here. Try playing the arpeggio as a one-octave chord and that might help you even more to hear the difference.

That's about the best I can do in a short explanation - but do ask your teacher's help with all aspects of your Aural training. (If you don't have an instrumental or voice teacher, perhaps you could find a teacher somewhere who'd give you a session on the aural tests and explain them to you? I think it would be worth it.)

Its hard to explain over a post! Is this the first exam you have done, because you would know major and minor if you have done scales previously....
Can you ask you teacher to give you some examples of pieces in major keys and minor keys?
But, basically, (to me anyway) major sounds happy, minor sounds sad. For helping you to hear the difference, try this website.
