I am beginning to get the hang of this wonderful piece - well the first movement that is for my grade 6. Anybody else learning it?

Have played it before. Not my favourite, to be honest, but it's a good recital number.

Have you got any particular problems with it? smile.gif

Well, only the usual problem - I can play every single bar of it but I am not yet able to play them all consecutively at a reasonable speed! Also, the accompanyment takes some getting used to. Hope to take the exam in April or early May.

Jack Brymer wrote of it; 'A masterpeice in Hindemith's best vein. Ranks with everything else written for the combination (clarinet and piano) apart from the Brams Sonatas'.

Interesting... Have to say, I'd personally rank the Saint-Saens and Bernstein sonatas, and the Arnold Sonatina above the Hindemith...

Brymer might not have known the Arnold and the Bernstein when he wrote that. I have fond memories of the piano part, though perhaps slightly less fond memories of the amount of practice it took to be able to play the two canons with each hand playing octaves.

Ah yes! My wonderful clarinet teacher - who is also a superb pianist - is grumbling ever so slightly about the accompaniment!
