I don't want to 'tread on anyone's toes' so I just wondered what forumers thought about an adult learners concert in Gloucester, May 2011. Looking at the calendar there is nothing going on in May.
I have a potential venue in mind. My piano teacher, who is from South Africa and started teaching here about three years ago here is fully supportive of having a forum event in Gloucester as she was so impressed by Teddington earlier this year. I would hope to generate some local interest.
Would anyone be interested in coming to Gloucester? The venue is a five minute walk from the train station and there is a car park near the venue.
Here is a link to the webpage for the concert on June 4th.
All welcome

If I can make it, I'll come along, if not, I wish you all the best.

Prioritise your local interest first.

Where are all the folks in the West?
What a shame that clavicembalo is no longer with us as I am sure he would have been happy to have a Forum event nearer home.
Gloucester is a long way from Costa Rica BUT...
I do hope to be in the UK some time around mid year and I would really like to try and make this. My mum lives near Lydney so Gloucester would be quite manageable for me if I can get the timing to coincide with my work commitments. I see from the events calendar that the date is fixed for 4 June.
I look forward to hearing more about what you have in mind.
Anyone up for doing a combo with my oboe????

Where is the venue? I can't think of anywhere that close to the station that would be suitable, unless it is one of the local schools?

There is a hall for practice with a piano and the concert will be held in the church which has a reasonable grand piano. The venue is St John's Northgate, Gloucester. It is in the town centre with parking close by and probably a seven minute walk from the railway station. Cost probably 10 GBP plus about 2.50 GBP for afternoon tea. Organised by

(Either is fine by me, just wanted to know....)

I'll do a proper job with booking forms etc when I figure out what to do and when work has settled down in a few weeks. Will also do a programme - there will be two one hour sessions, with afternoon tea in between - the person doing afternoon tea makes the most scrumptious cakes!

Lovely Jojo. Look forward to meeting you.
I thought it would be nice for us to go over to the church hall (next door really) to have a nice afternoon tea. Hope I can prise folk away. I also have a willing band of volunteers to help this go smoothly.
I do feel a bit apprehensive though as I haven't arranged anything like this before, but my duet partner, Joy, is co- commander and I also have the back up of my teacher. Fingers crossed.

Hello ScotLiz - sorry for my absence.
Moving home - and all that awful stress out on the way - I am now inundated with builders, plumbers, electricians, decorators - for the past 12 weeks. And that has often meant losing my internet connection; and that's affects my business.
I hope to come if that's alright. I think I am progressing - more concentration on enjoying playing at present than exams; 'though I expect I will still get the bug to go for grade 5 later in the year. I am very strange in that I enjoy doing the exam - it's all those scales that are challenging!!!
The event sound great.
Look forward to seeing you then, hopefully.

I'm not technically an adult learner, so please slap my wrists if this is out of order....

Gloucester is not a million miles from me, so if anyone is after a viola player for any ensemble stuff I would be happy to oblige.

I am thinking about this. Is there going to be a meal afterwards: I only ask at this early stage as I need to make sure I don't end up on the train that is taking 11 1/2 hours, if my eyes are not deceiving me. The advance tickets make it much cheaper but the only annoyance is having to be on a designated train.

This one is specifically billed as an Adult Learners event. Although I am an adult and still learning, I don't think that's quite what is meant!! Which is why I said I'm happy to turn up if anyone needs a violist in order to have a bash at some quartets or somesuch.

I keep looking in here longingly... I am so miffed that I won't be able to make this event.

Especially as a lot of people I'd like to meet in person will be going.
I still don't have my UK trip planned yet but I'm keeping an eye on July... knowing my luck it will be put back to August and there are no Forum events for that month on the calendar...
I'd like to ask a silly question:
How do people go about getting their act together in duets and ensembles? Do you find ways of meeting up in the run up to the concert to practice? Or do you just go it alone and try and put it together during the time before the concert on the day?
I was wondering whether on earth it could work for me to join in a Forum concert day when I have no hope of being able to practice with anyone really, living just a wee bit far away. Playdays are great because it's just meet and play on the day...
It would be good to add something to skylark's explanatory thread ("Forum concerts and other events") on how folks can prepare for these events but unfortunately she is no longer with us here on the Forum to edit it.

The only ones I've been to are the ones Skylark organised. For the duets and the ensembles I took part in, we all had the parts before hand so we could practise and then just had a rehearsal together on the morning of the concert.

I have been known to play a piano duet with someone who lived across the Irish Sea.

Andy-piano-flute and I only got together on the morning of the event, and indeed that is when most of the rehearsals take place.

The one forum event I've been to so far was a very relaxed and informal affair - rehearsals on the morning and then go for it!
I'm doing a summer school in August and I have the chance to accompany a professional violinist there. I'd love to have a go at the repertoire with anyone who fancies doing the violin part (even if it is just a play-through and not a full performance):
Beethoven Sonata Op30 no 3
Franck Sonata in A major
Smetana Aus der Heimat
Brahms Sonata in G major op 78
I've had a couple of offers to play through some of the pieces with friends, but the more different versions I can hear, the better! Violins are a mystery to me, so it is all a bit of a learning curve...
