hello everyone!
just wondering who is also doing grade 6 this term and what pieces you are doing! I'm playing the siciliano (from sonata no. 6 in E) by bach, the prelude from the suite antique by rutter and the study no. 2 by telemann! I love the suite antique (see the loud! thread) and the telemann! somehow the bach still needs a bit of work, though, cos I always forget it has four sharps rolleyes.gif !

Um, I'm not taking it this term I don't think... in the summer probably.
I am playing:
Piece 1. CPE Bach Sonata in E minor movement 2
Piece 2. Don't know.
Piece 3. Purple bamboo melody

Purple Bamboo Melody sounds interesting! Was that the piece that you said was out of print?? I can recommend the Rutter piece laugh.gif !

Yes, well my local music shop said it was out of print, but on asking my conductor if he knows of any places that might have it, he recommended all flutes plus and then said "where did you order it from" and I told him and he mentioned they were terrible for stuff like that! But my dads going to get it mail ordered from AFP for me. smile.gif

For Grade 6 last year (Guildhall though) I played:
1. City Life
2. Mozart - Concerto in D, 2nd movement
3. Study from the Flute Players Companion

This March, Grade 7 Guildhall, I am playing:
1. CPE Bach - Allegro and Adagio from the E minor Sonata
2. Vaughan Williams - Passepied and Gavotte from Suite de Ballet
3. Not decided on a study yet

I know I did the siciliano when I took my Grade 6, erm, a year? a year and a bit? ago. Lovely piece, but I kinda trasshed it because I didn't get to know the piano part well enough before the exam and we got out of time while I was in it. I still passed, but I recommend lots of practise with your accompanist.

I did Suite Antique too. Lovely piece etc.... smile.gif

I can't remember which was my study, I think it was no. 73 from the blue book, which was lots of fun, but that might have been another grade I'm thinking of or something!?

mmm, no. 73 doesn't really ring a bell! right: lots of practice with an accompanist. not that I actually have one yet huh.gif ! however I do have that useful cd which has the piano accompaniment on it! smile.gif

There are some great pieces on the current syllabus. I haven't done any of the current list A pieces, I love the Rutter though, and has anyone played the Gaubert Madrigal? (I can't believe they have pieces on the list both called Madrigal by Gaubert and Aubert - are they trying to confuse people???!!) It's lovely... I did it for my A Level recital.

The Madrigal sounds ever so lovely on the CD! I'm rather wishing I could play that, too (instead of my A list piece tongue.gif ). What key is it in (I don't like doing stuff that has more that 4 sharps or flats - and those only rather reluctantly tongue.gif )?

The Philippe Gaubert? In... G I think. Possibly D. Don't quote me... I would have to check! It does have quite a few random forays into other keys though, and a few high up runs that I remember struggling with! But well worth learning sometime - have a try of it for fun after your exam! It's luverly. Though - don't buy it on its own, because it's soooooo expensive. It's in a book called... um, the Flautist's Collection book 5? or something like that - if you want to check it out let me know because I have it downstairs and could tell you. It's published by Kevin Mayhew and has a whole bunch of great pieces that are grade 5-6 ish, including the Faure Sicilienne that's on the current G5 syllabus, and the Caplet Reverie... great book. Oh and the Bach Arioso which is bootiful!

Lol... talk about getting off track. But yes, the Gaubert is scrumdidliyumcious!

Yes I sympathise over the 4 flats/4 sharps thing. Though 5 sharps is worse, eek! For some reason Dbs and D#s are evil, aren't they? And when you get to A#... bleh! There's something about keying a note that you usually think of as a sharp and it's a flat instead, or the other way about, like Db instead of C# or A# instead of Bb. I find that harder to get my head round on the flute than I ever did on the violin.
flutieplayer
A/ Bach Sonata (siciliano)
B/ Gaubert's Madrigal
c/ study no.56 from 76 graded studies

all 3 of these i think are nice but im gonna also b looking at the godard and the telemann pieces 2.

One of my Grade 7 pieces goes into 6 flats half way through, and I think in sight reading there can be up to 7 for Grade 7 :-\!!

the Flautist's Collection book 5

thanks! I think I'll order it and give it a go! I also think that scales with 4 or more sharps/flats don't sound as nice as scales like D minor (my fav. scale)! C# and D# always sound rubbish (with me at least smile.gif ), but third 8ve F# and G# are the worst!
