What Beethoven will you be listening to today? And if you need cheering up, here's a video of the last movement of Beethoven 5 that I think would have made Beethoven smile (sorry if this has been posted before!):

How old would he have been?

This week I've been completely obsessed with Dinu Lipatti wub.gif so I guess I'll be listening to whatever Beethoven I can find him playing smile.gif
Also might listen to the handful of Beethoven sonata recordings by Dubravka Tomsic I have - another favourite pianist of mine

Awesome vid btw =P

Possibly! Correct me if I'm wrong DC, but I believe we only know his baptism date for sure.

Yep..he was baptised on 17th December 1770. It was tradition to be baptised within 24 hours of the birth. His birthday is 16/17 December, depending on which account one reads.

Beethoven himself wasn't entirely sure of his birth date. His parents' first born son was Ludwig Maria Beethoven who was born in 1769, but only lived for six days. Our Ludwig's father (allegedly) destroyed his birth certificate when he tried to portray Beethoven as being younger than he was (by two years) when he wanted Ludwig to perform 'like Mozart'.

According to Wikipedia, the fountain of all knowledge wink.gif:

QUOTE
Beethoven was born of this marriage in Bonn; he was baptized in a Roman Catholic service on 17 December 1770, and was probably born the previous day, 16 December.[4] Children of that era were usually baptized the day after birth, and it is known that Beethoven's family and his teacher Johann Albrechtsberger celebrated his birthday on 16 December. While this evidence supports the case for 16 December 1770 as Beethoven's date of birth, it cannot be stated with certainty, as there is no documentary evidence of it (only his baptismal record survives).
