Full Version: Is This Ok?

I'm asking this because I've not done any "karaoke" things in a while and have been instead focusing on writing and singing my own songs.

I thought this sounded ok, but then someone else said it was nice but flat and dull. THANKS! lol. They wanted a more ringing tone, and I agree it certainly doesn't "ring", but in this particular song I was going more for a folky, muted, delicate and almost subdued tone...

In any case, all you lovely learned singing teachers here...give me your worst. What am I doing wrong in this? Is it alright? Meaning if I were to busk in the street, would it be acceptable?

Thanks!! biggrin.gif

Can't hear anything stylistically wrong with it, I think it's a very nice tone for the style you desire.

There are a couple of vocal issues I would address if I was your teacher - the pitching of the octaves is slightly off (e.g. the leap from RE to MEMBER ME in the first verse, and you have the same problem in almost all of the following verses), so I would possibly single them out and work on them for a bit.

Octaves can be funny things - beware of the "scooping" effect. Whilst on your page, I had a listen to "O Holy Night" as it's one of the mainstays of my Christmas repertoire. Lovely sound, but some of the tempo and rhythms are not the same as my copy!

Keep singing, gal! sing.gif

Oh wow, ok...I never noticed that re - member me issue...I'm not sure entirely if it's a shortcoming vocally, or if it's a stylistic thing I tend to do...though I think it's possibly 2/3 the first and 1/3 the latter.

I usually scoop up or down to notes, just cause that's how most pop singers do things nowadays, but this one I sort of wanted to not do that as I wanted more of a prim sound...a reedy, folky sound...but I think sometimes I'd forget this and my natural inclination to scoop / slide would come out. Hmm.

Thanks!
