What on earth is a violone?? Its on a piece by Corelli, I thought it was like a viol but its written in bass clef! unsure.gif

I have come across it as an organ stop (on the pedals), so it definitely has bass connotations.

I believe it was the lowest member of the viol family.

I love to play Schubert's Arpeggione sonata for flute but this was apparently written for a stringed instrument of this name (now often played on the violin).I believe that this instrument -arpeggione-is now obsolete- maybe the violone is a similarly obsolete instrument? wink.gif

Thanks!
Decibel
According to Grove's dictionary, a Violone is "In modern technology, the double bass viol, the direct ancester of the double bass. Historically, however, the word is notoriously imprecise, embracing a variety of meanings: any viol, a large viol (particularly a low-pitched viola da gamba) and even (in some Italian sources) a bass violin or violoncello." So now you know!!

An Arpeggione is a 6-stringed bowed instrument with frets about the size of a cello and sounding rather similar. It had a brief existence in the early 19th century. It is of note because of the Schubert sonata of that name. The sonata is usually played on a cello these days. It is a most beautiful sonata and well worth tackling on the flute but there are some note sequences which are tricky on the flute. biggrin.gif

We've just been doing that piece in my AS class as well! biggrin.gif According to my book of technical terms, a violone can be thought of as just a bass viol, at AS level at least. wink.gif
