For my diploma programme, i have been planning to do

Brahms clarinet concerto in Eb
Crussell Concerto no.2 in F minor
Rossini Introduction, theme and variations.

yes they are all romantic periodic music, but they are all very different, if this was justified and compared in the programme notes is this a good idea or is a more balanced programme of a few styles a better option?

I'm doing ATCL in December, with a more diverse programme, period wise.

I don't think I'd do all three of those pieces, regardless of justifying them in the programme notes : I'd certainly be thinking of playing at least one 20th century work, for starters.

ive only just changed to the crusell, before i have been preparing horovitz but it had a lot of challenges, thatd probably be a better choice then?

For balance, I'd say yes. The Crusell and Rossini were both written within 5 years or so of each other, and though the Brahms is 1890s, it leans much more towards Romanticism than 20th century styling.

Much as wearing my I'm going to a concert hat, I'd love to listen to this programme, my inner woodwind player is saying Crusell concerto great, why no French stuff, why no Twentieth Century.

This is rather samey in the range of Clarinet music. I am not stating it does not bring different technical challenges, but if I built an Oboe programme that had both the Saint Saens and the Poulenc Sonata (especially if I put something else that is French in) without maybe considering the Hindemith or some Bach or the Lennox Berkley Sonatina or some Albinoni, I'd be equally guilty and yet the Saint Saens and the Poulenc contain very different challenges too.

Horowitz, Brahms and Rossini would be a great combo. You definitely need a good mix of styles / periods and tempi without this you will get marked down for not showing variety in style.

Horowitz, Brahms and Rossini would also require a demon accompanist! Then again, so does most of the Dip repertoire

From your original programme of Brahms, Crussell and Rossini, I agree with the other suggestions of replacing either the Crussell or Rossini with something more modern. And are you sure you mean the second Brahms concerto?

I've posted it dozens of times around this place, but might as well again mention my Dip programme - Finzi Bagatelles, Saint-Saens Sonata and Weber Grand Duo Concertant; one briefly-considered programme included the Hindemith sonata with either the Weber Concertino or the Rossini Variations.

My dip. programme for December lacks any French content, but I think I'll be diverse enough with Brahms, Stanford and Leonard Bernstein
