i have just bought a midi-in-out cable, but have found thatit doesnt plug into my pc. It has two round plugs at either end and my computer doesn't have any holes for them to fit in. (my pc's a windows xp, so its not out of date). I searched on the interenet and now it says that i need a UX16, with the plugs that i already have stuck into it and a usb cable with it. SO whats the point in seeling the first ting that i bought if u cant connect it to anythign.

Lastly, if anyone has got this product , can u tell what i am missing if i just give all this midi cable stuff up and not buy any of it

Are you sure that it doesn't need a games port because that's what mine uses?

to attatch the midi cable to your computer and whatever midi device your using (i'm assuming a keyboard?) you will need an input device. i use a midisport 2x4- it looks just like a breakout box for an audio card.

you will also probably need two cables, so that the midi data can be transfered to the computer (when it is triggered by the keyboard) and the computer can send information back (the keyboard/other midi device should have a midi out, midi in, and midi thru port on it?)

just out of interest, which software are you using with it, or none at the moment?

Reignmurda,
what you have there is a midi cable for connecting one midi device e.g. a keyboard, to another midi device e.g. another keyboard! Its a common and easy mistake. It is usually used for the "midi thru" connection found on a keyboard.
What you need is a midi interface cable to connect both your PC and your keyboard (see image below) They are available for about £15 from most Computer or Music shops!

P.S. dont forget the "Midi in" cable goes into the "Midi out" connection on your keyboard...yes, I know it sounds daft but thats how it works and it makes sense if you think about it. Signal "out " of the keyboard goes "in" to the cable...I got it wrong first time. But then I'm just stupid!! blink.gif
Good Luck

i'm not entirely sure i understand the question sad.gif

you need a way of attatching the cable to your computer- this means you either need an input device as i mentioned earlier or, preferably, one of the cables that gae showed us a picture of.

hope that answers the question, if not let us know smile.gif

If you prefer USB devices, Edirol do a USB to Midi conversion for about £40.

Is this for connecting to a game port or a sound card? It looks similar to one that I have for that sort of connection on my desktop PC.

When I wanted to make such a connection (MIDI keyboard to Finale2004 under Windows XP) on my new laptop, last summer, I had to do it differently, as it has a less sophisticated sound board, with no external connection. I finished up with the EDIROL UM-1SX (as suggested by Freda Bloogs) which cost about £30. This takes power from and exchanges data with a USB port and exchanges MIDI data with any MIDI device.

what i mean oddy, is say i didnt get one of those plugs and just stuck with just a keyboard. What would i b missing. (Compare a person with a midi plug and one without. What is the one without missing.) and i dont mean anything physical, such as "he's missing a cable".

Thats the one Kenm. You have to also install the MPU-401 driver that comes with the Windows disc. This is the driver that converts the Game port into a Midi compatible device. It takes a bit of messing about but once its all set up its great!!

er, you would be missing the ability to record midi onto your computer using the keyboard as the control devise... is that what you mean?

i still dont get it laugh.gif i'm that slow witted
