Hi, I have been told that the Trinity Guildhall theory of music workbooks are the same as the ABRSM corresonding graded theory workbooks. Does anyone know if the content is exactly the same as ABRSM, in other words, if we followed the TG workbooks, would it cover the same things and get my pupils prepared the same as if I had given them an ABRSM book? The reason I am asking is that my local supplier was all out of ABRSM theory workbooks when I was last there, and they suggested that the Trinity are an equivalent.

I have pupils preparing for Grade 5 in particular.

Thanks indeed.

It's not exactly the same. Trinity cover some topics at different grades to AB and they also include topics that AB don't.

Questions are presented differently too, so it might be best to stick with what you're used to.

edit - that might come across wrongly! What I mean is it might be best to'stick to the format that your pupils are used to!'

The TG workbook is not at all the same! If you are preparing your students for AB, wait for an AB workbook!

You could order online - Amazon keep ABRSM stuff, and musicroom.

There is inevitably a lot of overlap, but there's also some difference. TG tend to cover material in a more logical way and each grade clearly builds on work at the previous. Of course, it can be used for AB exams, but it will need to be supplemented by other, probably AB-specific material. The TG books are much more user-friendly!

I definately agree on the TG books being presented in a more user-friendly way, and they are set out very well with an example answer given for each first question in the group. This is what really attracted me to these books initially.

I noticed the Grade 5 TG covers a few extra things like for example the pentatonic major scales on C and G, and also some work on modulations. They have helpful and simple explanatory and child age appropriate notes in the margins too. The books have a feel to them that is more 'conversational' and 'modern' than the AB.

Looking at these books, almost makes me want to change to TG! blink.gif

TG theory Gr 5 counts for AB grade 6 practical........I am thinking of swapping over to them. I have some students doing the TG Gr 1 book at the moment!
