Hi, I'm a little confused. I've been reading the information about the portfolio for the LRSM and I'm not sure if I need to write the case studies for 6 months or whether or not I just need to have been teaching that pupil for 6 months???
I know I need 3 pupils to write the studies on but do i need to do them for as long as 6 months progress starting from now?

Hello

You need to write case studies on three pupils. You need to have been teaching them for at least 6 months. Ideally the 3 students will be different in ability and need as this gives you a chance to show different teaching strategies and enables you to cover different aspects of learning in your case studies. Because you are trying to demonstrate a holistic approach to teaching - preparation, delivery, reflections etc it is best if at least one of the case studies cover at least a year of teaching. If you can maybe take one beginner pupil of at least 6 months then a pupil around grade 3 - 5 and if you can a grade 6 level student. This way you can look at different aspects of teaching. A common mistake is for candidates to merely write "lesson plans". If you read page 33 of the syllabus you will see that this is not what is needed.

If you have good recall of the progress of your students and why you taught them as you have - repetoire, goals etc then there is no need to start the case studies from "now" but you can begin to write the case studies based on what you have already done.

One format that people find useful is to divide the case studies into three or four monthly sections.

If you also look carefully at the attainment descriptions on page 67 this also clarifies a little what they are after.

Hope I have helped answer your question.

Thank you Margaret that is a big help. If I need to have been teaching the student for at least 6 months, and they are a complete beginner does that mean that I don't cover any of the lesson content that was covered in the first 6 months ? or could I give a summary of what had been covered before I start the indepth case study? Hope that question makes sense!

Not sure I quite understand the question but here goes anyway...
(1) If you have a pupil about to start lessons with you who is a complete beginner then you could write your case study as you go along with them - covering their very first 6 -9 months of lessons.
(2) If you have a pupil who was a complete beginner and you have, at this very moment, been teaching them for around 6 months then you have a choice: either write the case study (wholly or partly) retrospectively - looking back at their first 6 months of lessons and then maybe keep the case study going for another few months OR
Summarise their progress and achievements so far and start the case study from now.

It all depends on when you want to take the LRSM really. If all your case studies date from today then obviously it will take you the next 9 months - year to complete them. smile.gif

No that's great! So I don't have to have been teaching the student for 6 months prior to beginning the case study, I have to have been teaching the student for 6 months prior to submitting the case studies. This is great as I have been teaching a complete beginner for the last 2 weeks and it would be great to follow their progress for the next 6-12 months.

Not sure when I want to take the diploma, when I'm ready I suppose. Will see how I get on when I start the portfolio. Perhaps next summer which should give me sufficient time to submit 3 months prior to that.

Thank you Margaret

Don't forget you will need to choose one of your "case study" pupils to feature in your video.

Hi, Its Frances again, I have another question about the case studies (I'm still going strong with them!!) one of the students I am using as a case study only comes once every 2 or 3 weeks for her lesson. Is it still ok if I only study her for 6-9 months though? obviously there isn't as much material as my other studies?
