What a lovely post, Celeste, thank you!
My maternal grandad had died before I was born, and my paternal grandad died when I was about six, but the real problem was that my father, when he was a teenager, had fallen out with his dad so we hardly ever saw him anyway. My dad was the best, probably because of his traumatic experience, and I wish he could have seen more than just my first son, as he would have loved all three of them. My five grandchildren always give me a hug when we meet, even the youngest one, so I must be doing something right!
My 'real' Grandads, both maternal and paternal, both died before I was born, so my 'Grandpa' was really my mother's step-father. Grandpa didn't have children of his own and claimed to 'dislike' them, but I must have worn him down eventually!
To me, signs of affection are a massive hint that you are doing a lot right!!
