I
think I was 10...

I chose 10 anyway.
Although I can't really imagine a 3 year old playing a flute, mostly because of the length, I mean, I know you get bend heads but for a 3 year old it would probably have to be bent double!

I started the recorder when I was 6/7, but only started the flute at 13. I'd wanted to start before that but was on the waiting list for a year before I could get a teacher. It was worth it, though - my teacher is strict but really good!

I'm not embarrased to say that I started at 13, because I made it to grade 6 standard in less than 3 years

!

Yeah who cares what age you start at. I just put it in case anyones is shy which they probably wont be. Well done on getting so far in three years. By the way I started flute 3/4 years ago. It was piano I started at 6 but I thought I was on Viva Piano.

It's a joke. Grade 9 doesn't exist, and to get the "woohoo" joke (which has become ubiquitous!) look for a thread called Prizenight (I think it was in the General Discussion Forum). You might want to look at the Holly Williams thread too, but it might be a bit intimidating at the lenght it's reached!

I started flute at 18 (it was my 18th birthday present) but I started clarinet at 11.
There was a girl at school who used to throw people out of the music practice rooms claiming she needed to practice for her grade 9 exam!

I was 13 when I started the flute, 14 when I switched to the clarinet and 43 when I finally took up the flute again! Still, as someone said on another thread, you're never too old to learn.

I was 10. I makes me feel rather a lot better about what level I have managed to reach, when I've only been playing for 6 years, and for 2 1/2 years of that I was with pretty awful peri-teachers, group taught in school.
So I should be proud of where I am. As should we all!

No way would I let my children play a recorder in the car!!!

Guitar at 7, but I never really enjoyed that.
Clarinet at 14, liked it for a bit, gone off it now
Piano 14 and 1/2, still love it. Although it's not going well at the moment...

I was 13 and a half to be precise when I started the clarinet, which means I must have done two exams in one year at times! (I'm now nearly 18). Then I decided to start Alto saxophone when I was 15 and a half, and then started baritone just over a year ago!

I started recorder when I was 6/7 ish so I found it really easy to move onto clarinet, as I could read music. But then I got confused because the fingerings were different, and now have the same problem again with sax!

I WISH I had started as a teenager, however i was the grand old age of 41 when I picked up a sax (or any instrument!) for the 1st time. You are never too old to learn and have fun.

Clarinet : 8
Saxophone: 16
Flute : 16
Recorder : slightly more complicated, started at 5, played 'til I was about 17-18ish, then largely stopped as flute, saxophone and (especially) clarinet took up more and more of my time. Restarted as part of the forum activities earlier this year! (at 32).

Why do your options jump from age 10 to teenager (13-16)?
Are 11 and 12 year olds teenagers?

I can't vote on this because I was 11 when I started. There isn't an 11 option.
