This is the violin I eventually decided on after playing around 50 in the space of 4 days x_x i'm all violinned out and exhausted!
He's Irish, made by a member of the Perry family (they couldn't trace back which member. my guess is it wasnt Thomas or it'd be twice the price tongue.gif) was made in 1810... and cost me ?6000 which is uhhh only a mere thousand over my original budget........ ph34r.gif

The trouble with Feargal is I can only think of Feargal Sharkey who has a squeaky whiny voice and over wiggly vibrato - neither of which you have.. laugh.gif

Is he (the violin) definitely a boy? If he has a quick s e x change then he could be called Aoife or Erin or Niamh.
jojo
well, there was this ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS BOY in Galway named.....Declan and I think that is a lovely name which suited an equally lovely blue eyed boy wub.gif

ps when you are ready could you post us a sound clip pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee biggrin.gif

laugh.gif Barry's quite right though! And it tends to be used as shortened/alternative version of Fionnbarra (or Finbarr in English) - patron saint of Cork! Fionnbarra/Finbarr the Fiddle might be an idea?

Oh ffliwt if I had to chose an Irish name it would definitely be SEAMUS!!! wub.gif

If you haven't heard of Seamus Heaney go and look him up. He's one of the greatest poets alive and anybody can read his poetry because it's so approachable. He wrote some amazing pieces about his childhood experiences growing up on a farm. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1995 and many other prizes and professorships.

If you can only find one poem try 'Death of a Naturalist' - incredible language. It should be on the internet somewhere.

So for me it would be Seamus without a doubt - so dignified, elegant, talented and pure genius - what better name for your new Irish friend. biggrin.gif (and Feargal Sharkey was horrible ill.gif )

If it's a girl I quite like Aoife wink.gif Oh and we NEED a sound clip pretty please????
DiscoPants
looks like a perry & wilkinson to me.
now you need an irish bow to go with it.

miffy
Declan or Finlay?

wilkinson doesn't sound very Irish! Perry and Wilkinson sounds a bit like Solicitors..
Marks & Spencer? biggrin.gif

Cael is a good Irish male name, means 'slender'.

unsure.gif I'm a bit confused by that - never met or heard of anyone of that name, but there's a word in Irish "caol" (I would say that something like "quail") which I would generally use to mean "narrow", which could be it. Never heard of it being used as a name though.

There are lots of very makey-uppy "Irish" names on (supposedly) Irish name websites, and most of the names on them which are genuine are badly misspelled or have very dodgy pronunciation guides

I got a new (to me) car a month ago and have been looking for a nice name for it.

This afternoon I christened it 'Aoife' with some turtle wax laugh.gif ( I am devoted to washing my car at least once in its lifetime).

It's actually Japanese/Scottish and not Irish at all howDoYouDo.gif

That brings back a memory from somewhere..I'm sure Cael was a baddie in a programme when I was a kid..got me thinking now!
ffliwt
Cael is a welsh word with a totally different meaning so that'd throw me laugh.gif

I did consider Finnigan (Finn for short) or Finley... is that even Irish?!

To be honest... i cant even seem to work out if its a boy or a girl... or whether id rather it be a boy or a girl tongue.gif My last violin was a girl. We were the best of friends! tongue.gif

Sounds to me like you need to spend longer getting to know each other. smile.gif You've got years yet, so plenty of time to come up with a name. tongue.gif

agree.gif

don't rush into any names, take time to get to know your violin!

the name has to come from YOU!

If I had an Irish violin, I would call it Murphy........ (note to self: must put an Irish violin on the shopping list).

Your new violin looks gorgeous ffliwt and all best wishes for a fantastic future together.

Certainly an acquired taste, but as "adolescent angst" pop songs go "Teenage Kicks" was brilliant.

I think I want a sort of mythical mystical sounding name for him hmm... one extreme or another. Either a 'thats a peoples name not a violins name!' like Paul or something. That could be funny tongue.gif
Or a really non peopley interesting mystical name. I'll probably go for the latter!
Matt Molloy
Try "Saoirse" which is Gaelic for "Freedom" and I believe is a unisex name.

Cheers,

Matt.

Eowyn is from Lord of The Rings but I also chose it for a reason, it's because my violin's personality is like the personality of the person in the movie/story (or maybe my personality when I play the violin is like Eowyn's??? interesting I'd say!) ph34r.gif

That could well be the case, I believe I first heard/read about it looking at a site about Irish mythology, after a discussion at work, so it could well be of dubious internet mythology, rather than anything else.. smile.gif

It does mean something else in Welsh too, as ffliwt says, so maybe not anyway.
