Dear forum funsters,

I've been asked to choose a motet about light for a forthcoming confirmation service.

After racking my brains, I just came up with

O nata lux (Tallis)
Jesus said: I am the light of the world (Simon Mold)

Any other ideas?...

Thanks!

The Tallis is good!

My brain is saying 'Holy is the true light' - but I can't remember who it's by. wacko.gif

We sing a setting of 'Kindle a Light' - but it 's more Advent than confirmation (lighten the darkness etc).

We do both the Harris and Shephard versions - but it is more a bereavement text isn't it?..

With a big choir how about 'light of the world we know thy name' by Elgar?

What about *shudders* Rutter - The Lord bless you and Keep you?

Ah - it would have been the Harris that rang a bell - but that says I didn't remember the remainder of the words! ok - sorry.

How about S.S. Wesley, Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace? Contains a couple of good 'light' lines: "God is light and in him is no darkness at all" and "darkness and light to thee are both alike".

Just my groat's worth...

Indeed.

Or W H Harris's Lead Kindly Light? not really a motet, i suppose.

Te lucis ante omnia by? who? Wood? Bairstow? again, not really a motet.

Is there a suitable bit from the end of anyone's requiem? (luceat eis and so on)

Oooo the anthem that I absolutely LOVED from a confirmation service recently was "view me lord a work of thine" by... um... oh heck brain like a sieve, Richard Lloyd I think. Not about light, but it struck me as very appropriate. OTOH our Youth Choir sang "You Raise me up" by Westlife at the service where half of them were confirmed... that MIGHT not suit all churches ;-)

Good one - double choir? unsure.gif

I don't know a 'te lucis ante omnia'. I know a 'te lucis ante terminum': Balfour Gardiner?
also a much older setting by *thinks* Robert Whyte?? not sure.

Yes, View me Lord is by Richard Lloyd.
