You should "listen" to what your body has to tell you. Your fingers and hands are sore for a reason (could may include you're overdoing it). If you can manage normal household tasks without pain it is probably not arthritis - age comes into it though.

A good teacher would help, showing you when to relax, checking your hand&arm positions and suchlike. In the final analysis if you are a student hoping to take a dip next year you shouldn't really be asking this question here but of your teacher. Here, the best you will get is the half-baked opinions of people like me unable to make a proper diagnosis from scant information.

All the best though,
A

Where is the pain?

If it feels like you are fingers are stiffening up then it's probably just muscle fatigue; for example, if you're working on tremeli or trills and are trying to build up stamina then a certain amount of tiring is to be expected... According to Antti Siirala, he doesn't practice for as many hours a day as some pianists, but he does go to the gym to maintain his muscles; I've never tried this approach but it may work for you.

If the pain is concentrated on the back of your hand towards your wrist, perhaps with a burning sensation or extreme tenderness at times, then it may be RSI or Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. If this is the case, and it doesn't clear up, then it might be advisable to go and see someone about it. Thankfully, with rest and improved wrist posture my RSI cleared up by itself (I'm 'at risk' as I spend the vast majority of my time either playing the piano or typing).

Okay well I'll write proper now... very hard might I add!!!
um It's more in my fingers, especially my index like the knuckle bits...
When the new term start's I'll ask my teacher and maybe see my GP again. Might advise me to a specialist or something :S!

Thanks for the help
