Pity - I stay over in Ilkley or Otley for a couple of nights every week (Ilkley this week), but cant do your concert on a Saturday. I also had the opportunity to play the organ at St Margarets some time ago, quite the best organ I have ever played. Good luck with the concert anyway.

In an English Country Garden - a musical tribute to Percy Grainger

Concert goers are in for a treat when Keiron Anderson brings the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra to St Margarets Church, Ilkley on Saturday 23rd July at 7pm for "A Musical Tribute to Percy Grainger".

This orchestral concert promises to be extra special with a varied programme of classical music by the eccentric, brilliant, quirky and fun Australian composer Percy Grainger. Although his name may not be familiar to everybody, Percy's beautifully crafted arrangement of "Danny Boy" was brought to the fore in the film "Brassed Off" and his well known ditty "Country Gardens" is instantly recognisable to all as the children's favourite "In an English Country Garden".

But Grainger's skill and creative flair for composition doesn't stop there. He was an avid collector of folk songs and his original works are often influenced by simple melodies that are woven together with great care and affection, many of which have become key works in the orchestral wind repertoire.

Grainger's clever musical arrangements always carry his characterful and intense wit, which the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra will bring to life under the expert direction of Keiron Anderson. The programme will include Country Gardens, Lincolnshire Posy, Molly on the Shore, Blithe Bells, Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon, Children's March, Irish Tune from Country Derry and many more.

The Yorkshire Wind Orchestra is a regional orchestra made up of semi-professional and amateur woodwind, brass and percussion players and is a leader in its field. The orchestra's musical director, Keiron Anderson, is known locally to many from his work as Leader of Creative Arts at Ilkley Grammar School. As such, this concert is guaranteed to be a fitting tribute to the 50th anniversary of the end of Percy's life.

Tickets are on sale now from Grove Bookshop, Ilkley, Wharfedale Equestrian, Guiseley and online from the orchestra's website www.yorkshirewinds.co.uk priced ?12 / ?10 (concession) / ?6 (student and under 16s).
