My favourite would have to be jupiter because I just love the 'I vow to thee my country bit in the middle'
It almost makes me feel like crying!
*unusually deep voice* not that I ever cry because I'm a dead 'ard and strong bloke

I love Mars but I get that col legno rhythm at the beginning stuck in my head and it feels like it's drilling into my skull all night!

A whole bunch of them called a horchestra.
I think of it as Holst's Plants.
and if it was, the dandelion would make me smile.

I love jupiter and uranus, im not keen on colin matthew addition to the suite (pluto), i guess he's write in how hes composed it as little is known about the planet and it is a very long away, i think his style is considerably different from holst but there are certain traits, which isn't suprising since he spent alot of time with imogen holst whilst writing the addition. anyway going off track, the suite is for full orchestra and huge one at that and 2 female choruses appear in neptune and pluto (no words just lots of mixed harmonies to aaaaagh)
i love the entire suite and think you have to hear it in its entirety to hear the full beauty of it rather than confine your favourite to one movement, and anyway they all represent different things so they work well as a suite.

I like jupiter- but I hate it when people play the 'famous' theme from it really slowly and cheesily- it is supposed to be the 'bringer of jollity' after all, not some sentimental hymn. I voted for Uranus though- it's easily the most fun to play (and I have performed the entire Planets suite with 3 different orchestras!)
For whoever asked, the Planets is written for a large orchestra, including 6 horns, bass oboe, alto flute, celeste and organ, as well as an offstage women's choir in Neptune.

It's Holst's best known work and is scored for large orchestra, including six horns, two piccolos, bass flute and organ, plus a women's choir in the last movement. Sir Adrian Boult conducted the first performance in 1919 (though without Venus and Neptune). I think Holst also wrote a version for two pianos but I've never heard that one.
I love Neptune because it's so mysterious (it is called "The Mystic", after all). The ending is mega spine tingling.

Pluto wasnt discovered when he wrote The Planets suite, and the Sun is a star, not a planet.
Jupiter is a good one for horns.............not that i'd ever played the proper version in an orchestra
