violinist/cellist mixed into 1
I play 3 instuments, cello, violin and piano. I just wondered how may instruments u people out there play. It would be great to leave a message and show off to the world. biggrin.gif
missniffler
Er 6 - if singing, ocarina and recorder count! Oh, and flute - v. badly. (didn't count that).

I also play three instruments: Piano, Viola, and Viola da gamba. smile.gif

well, I play the flute and sing. however, I don't think that you should call the thread "how clever are you?" because playing more instruments doesn't necessarily make you cleverer. I, for example, would love to be able to play the piano well (can only play a few tunes at the moment) but unfortunately don't have time to take lessons. I don't think that that makes me less clever than other people, though, just because they have the chance to do all they want. also, playing more instruments means that you sometimes can't play all of them with the same intensity and skill that you can when you just concentrate on a few (not meaning to offend anyone who plays lots of instruments - I really admire that, too). I think you get the gist, anyway... smile.gif
i like piano
i dun think that playing many instrument is consider as ''clever''.maybe one can play 10 instrument but was in grade 1 for each instruemnt.sorry for saying this.(if it offends u).
i just dun agree with ur topic title....r u clever......
Sonata in b
I would consider the piano as the only instrument I can really play... however I did learn to play recorder and Pipa (a Chinese instrument) but I dropped them while still at beginner level. The piano I did make to professional standard though blink.gif

playing lots of instruments definitely does NOT make you "clever". also, why should you "show off" about playing multiple instruments??

I play several instruments, but only a few of them to a vaguely decent standard (violin, viola, piano, recorder, singing and horn). The rest are all either self-taught (guitar, organ, recorder, trumpet) or I've been taught simple tunes by my friends (e.g. flute, clarinet, cello).

There are millions of really intelligent people out there who DO NOT PLAY ANY INSTRUMENTS AT ALL. (A case in point, friends of mine with places at Oxford and Cambridge next year to read law/English/science, who can't read music).

One of my best friends is a very talented bassist but doesnt play anything else... and has a place at Cambridge to read Computer Science.

Also, there are several people who play several instruments who really aren't all that intelligent (I know a few!)

I also think it's much more intelligent to work on getting one instrument really good than spreading thin over getting several instruments to a mediocre standard.

Your title of this poll indicates that only the people that play lots of instruments can claim to be clever. It sounds like you think that this is the case.

I assume this was not your intention.

Well said Cheeble! I was waiting for somebody to express my own views more eloquently than I can, and that person proved to be you! smile.gif

Me, I play two instruments... dry.gif

Hi, Cheeblinia Maxima,

We've only just had a poll about this, surely. Could the original poster look it up?
Me, I'm always on the fiddle but that doesn't make me Yehudi exactly, and the CD-recorder was playing up so I need to practice that a lot more.

I don't think musical abilities and "cleverness" have a direct correlation

though if I might express my perception (from these forums) it seems probable that those interested in music come from backgrounds that promote education. And it doesn't necessarily mean musical education. My longest term student is doing a diploma in spite of his parents.

You will find more younger people doing A levels and/or going to university on the AB boards that you will on, e.g., the Ebay ones. It's how it is.
Nicola
i agree with cheeble, however would like briefly to point out that one can be intelligent without a place at Oxford or Cambridge, too.

one, yeh i don't agree with the title.

Please remember that the original poster is new and may not be accustomed to the general ways of the board; may be young (the youngest I have had the pleasure to address is 8) and may be relatively new to music - perhaps even an overseas student.

So please, give her/him a chance.
If I included all the things made into instruments for electroacoustic music, I'd count a lot. I don't suppose dustbins and "various containers with belly dancing coins" would be taken seriously though compositions have arisen from them and needed practice.

various containers with belly dancing coins, grade 7
bassmadmatt
My main instruments are bass guitar, mandolin and guitar. Also play accordion, trumpet, tuba, recorder, percussion and tabor pipe. Have grades passed in most of them (only low grades though-nothing above G5).
sarah-flute
lol...

speaking in all modesty I'm very clever and play thousands of instruments... onnist.

ah yes, sorry, didn't mean to sound as if stating the opposite. was using examples to try and prove a point...

sorry rhaps, but some things wind me up and this is one of them unfortunately. i'll be quiet now.

Speaking of which, does a person not have to be 13 to post on a forum without their parents' permission?

It's a thought: concerto for tuned dustbins, belly dancers and orchestra.
Who is conducting?

Oh dear...well, these things do happen of course...hopefully surgery isn't often required!!!
Um, perhaps I should say I turned belly-dancing coins into a musical instrument because while I like dance, I uh, well....umm, I'd better shut up.
It is probably not a pretty sight!

So a person below the age of 13 can? Well, they do...no matter.

I don't.
DavidMusic said, "does a person not have to be 13 to post on a forum without their parents' permission?"

The logic - He is suggesting that a person of not-13 can post on a forum without parents' permission.

Alternatively, anyone who is not 13 can post without permission.

Don't blame me for the mystery. I'm assuming I've interpreted the INTENTION of the statement as: does someone have to be 13 or older to post without parental permission.

Mm?

Some people like teachers use double negatives instead of simple positives.

Sometimes (I am not saying its the case here) its grudging and sometimes it is hard to work out what exactly is being said.
I had an old teacher who used to say, like, 'he's not unintelligent' because he could not bring himself to say 'he's intelligent'.

At varying levels of skill: Piano, Voice, Flute, Descant/Tenor recorder (same fingering, so I counted as one) and Treble Recorder. Currently, Voice and Flute are my best.
Saxy
I play sax, flute, oboe, clarinet and piano - I can play all 4 saxes but only particuarly focus on my soprano and alto playing, and I also double on cor anglais with oboe. But I don't see myself as being clever for being able 2 play more than 1 instrument eg. saxes all have the same fingering and so does oboe and cor. Also I'm terribly focussed on just playing woodwind instruments which makes me flexible for pit work.
Oddball
I play:

Military Bugle - Still pushing for the G on top of the stave...
Flugelhorn - Still pushing for that same G
Clarinet - Gr3
Guitar - Grade 4
Piano - Self Taught

I now play the clarinet (grade 5), piano (grade 1), Theory (grade 3) and have singing lessons (grade 5). i also do kodaly if you know what that is (it helps me with my aural) I used to play the violin and stopped at grade 5 or 6, so i can still play it!. I used to play the recorder to when i was little. I am very fortunate though as my mum is a music teacher so she teaches me the clarinet and theory. She also teaches saxaphone and recorder. biggrin.gif

The title of this seems to be 'how clever are you' Id just like to point out that even if you played 25 instruments it doesnt necesarily make u any cleverer than if you playd 1.
-Just my opinion

I love the way people are putting instruments down they've prob only played twice in their life! e.g the ocarina!!!
I play 7 instruments and actually play ALL of them on a weekly basis.
I play soprano, alto and tenor sax in a jazz band, I have and am currently taking grades on alto and tenor. Clarinet is my main instrument (grd8) then alto sax (grd7) I also play bass clarinet in a county woodwind ensemble. I play piano (grd6) and I've recently bought a guitar which I also have lessons on.
I know most of my instruments are very similar but each one has its own little difficulties! e.g. cant get top F# on the sop sax but can on the others etc. Playing lots of instruments doesnt make you clever tho! You could argue the more instruments you play the more stupid you are for spending all that money on them! lol
Ramm
I can play: Piano (gr5) Trumpet (gr......um gonna do gr1.... sad.gif ) and...erm...burping, shouting and talking I have (last 3 at gr8 biggrin.gif )
kayladavies
I have a friend who can play the Violin, Cello, Double Bass, Piano, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Guitar, Percussion and a few notes on the trumpet.

Ok that's fantastic but you've posted this in at least 5 or 6 threads now, plus started two of your own about number of instruments played. We get the picture!

I can now officially say two instruments, but although I haven't started guitar yet, I will do very soon, so I might as well vote for 2! biggrin.gif

It's actually 'instrument' in the singular (notice the 'r') and 'instruments' as the plural form. smile.gif

Oh, and I play one. Only one - the clarinet.
