I play in a youth concert band (still waiting to be moved up to the youth orchestra). Is there anybody out there who is a member of Suffolk Youth Music? I am a member of the North Suffolk Youth Concert Band, and next year I will hopefully be a member of Suffolk Wind Band.

love orchestras, they're so much fun! plus you get to want music friends from all over the country/county!!!!!!
tour's are fun too, i'm been to the edinburgh festival with bedford and spain with mk. spain was arpund the time that American Pie came out on video "this one time, at band camp." ironically we watched it on the 26 hour bus ride home.

Since I'm from Northern Ireland, I'm in the unique position of being eligible for THREE national youth orchestras- Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland. So I'm in all of them, and my local youth orchestra as well. I love it- I've been all over the world on various tours and played in all the major concert venues in Britain and Ireland.

I'm in the Merseyside Youth Orchestra and it's great! Like hornplayer said, orchestras are not only fun, but a great experience for any string, woodwind, brass or percussion player. Usually there is a lot of string parts but when the wind and percussion get the tunes it's fantastic! I encourage anyone who plays to Grade 6+ standard to get in touch with their local youth orchestra and see if there are any places available...

Hi hgirl.
I'm from NI, but I didn't know I could do that!
Strictly speaking, Northern Ireland is not an independant country. Therefore, the NI Youth Orch is not National.
PS - how do you do lrsm, 5 a levels . . . are you mad?

I do know that Northern Ireland is not an independent country. UYO is still regarded as a national youth orchestra however. It might not make sense but thats the way it is
PS I'm not mad at all- I'd be practicing anyway, doing LRSM just gives me something concrete to work for, and I loved all my subjects- it was hard enough narrowing them down to 5!

Wow! Northamptionshire county youth orchestra is one of the best in the UK. The leader of the first violins Vikki Moran is amazing! A couple of my friends are in it and they constantly win loads of competitions. Its just so much commitment tho! Its like a 3 and a half hour rehearsal each saturday morning! I'm gonna audition this year, I havent before because I didnt think I could commit myself to it.

yeh, its really good fun. vicki is really good, and her desk partner is amazing as well. You should audition, the rehearsals are long, but when you're playing you don't notice the time, and the sectional rehearsals break it up a bit, so its not sitting for a long time. I used to go to music centre in Towcester before, so I was used to doing music from 9-12, but its still a lot of concentration for a weekend.

I only stopped playing in it because it was disbanded.

We did Harry Potter and Ice Castles but I can't remember any of the others. A lot of them were written for other instruments and then we had to transpose them as there were only 2 Saxophones in the Orchestra.
