How long should I take to do Grade 5 Theory. How long did it take you. Is it hard. Should i be scared.

The time taken to do grade 5 theory depends on the person. Some do it no time at all, others take years over it. It all depends on how much you already know and how much time you can put into it. When I was doing grade 5 theory all I could do was find it hard and labourious, but I'm now doing it for grade 6 as well. It took me about 5 or 6 months (on and off) to go through the grade 5 stuff (teaching myself most of the way). Grade 5 theory is hard until you finish the course (well sort of). It then fits into place perfectly at the end. You really shouldn't be scared about. If you are then you should ask for more guidance on specific subjects.
theory is interesting

Don't be scared.
The time you need depends on how much time you have to spend studying(horrible word think of it as broadening your mind!). I did it in just less than a year but if you have a lot of free time you could probably do it in less, the problem with me was I had to start from basics because I had't done a lot of theory before so it took me longer. By the "Theory in practice" Grades 1-5, The AB guide to music theory part 1, Theory is fun grade5, and you'll be sorted! Having studied hard for my G5 exam I feel that I have a much better musical knowlage that has helped with my practical work.

scared??? no!
Like anything, really, I think it depends entirely on how much time effort you want put in. I decided that I wanted to take my Gr6 practical and so I had to go Gr5 Theory. I already had grade 3 theory from when I was a lad (I took a 24-year break!) and just got the theory workbooks and started plugging through them. When I got to grade 3 I did some practice exams and asked my teacher to mark them, then continued through G4. At that point I thought I might as well do the exam, so I did some practice papers and then took the exam last autumn and am scheduled for the G5 exam this spring. I only get to spend a couple of hours each weekend at it - if I spent more time at it I could do it quicker, but there is no point because you have to wait for the exam date to come around.
I'd say just go for it. If you're not sure whether you can be ready for G5 at the next opportunity, go for grade 3 or 4 because it is at least good practice and an opportunity to build some confidence.

it's not very hard. some things like writing a melody are quite difficult when you start doing them if you're not used to them. don't be scared!
