I came across this forum and have been lurking for a few weeks, but now I thought it was time to introduce myself.

I had about 2 years' worth of piano lessons as a kid but never got as far as doing any grades before I gave it up, which I've come to regret over the years.

So, at the grand old age of 35 wink.gif I have just started learning to play the flute. So far, I've been working my way through some early units in the Learn as You Play Flute book and have been managing about 30 mins a day (I'm single mum to a 3-year old and also work full time). I am enjoying myself very much and am looking forward to starting my lessons next week.

I would like to work towards grades as a focus, when I get the hang of it!

Looking forward to getting to know you all more as my journey progresses smile.gif

Welcome to the forums, enjoy it. And have fun with the flute. I must admit, I am happy to read that you are taking lessons.

Why, do others choose not to take lessons? That seems a bit strange to me. While I have been quite happy on my own the last couple of weeks doing some preparation along with my CD; familiarising myself with my flute, learning some fingerings and getting used to making the right sound, it would be hard for me to be sure I was doing the right thing or to improve futher without lessons.

I often hear about people trying to learn the flute without a teacher. In my opinion it is to dangerous to step into bad habbits this way (it might be something else if you already play another woodwind instrument). I have had flute lessons from aged about 12 to 18 (I can't remember exactly) and restarted with the flute three years ago after 24 years without lessons. I directly found myself a teacher when I restarted, knowing this would be the only way for me to put it on a solid base.

Hi Brysonfire

Good to hear you are re-taking up the challenge. I've got my 3rd lesson on Friday. Like you, I love it, although you are definitely much more advanced than I am and certainly have many more years to anticipate than I have!!! blush.gif

I wish you well

Welcome to the great flute adventure! Do post about how you're getting on. smile.gif

Thanks for all the encouragment. I was a bit hesitant at posting initially, being such a novice. Felt a bit like I wasn't worthy as so many on here have so much experience. I hope I can be one of them in time smile.gif

I will keep you all updated, probably till I bore you all to tears! biggrin.gif

Highly unlikely! I still learn new things from reading about posters search for upgrade flutes / struggles with the third octave / issues with vibrato/double tonguing/flutter tonguing etcetc.

I always feel a bit rueful reading how quickly all these adult starters pick up the flute. I was 10 when I began, and it was a month before I could get a sound out every time I picked up my instrument! It was a good thing that the silver-shiny had me so intreguied...
