My small 9 year old daughter has just taken Grade 5 & is moving up a 1/2 cello.

We've been looking for 6 weeks for a suitable cello & would value any advice.

Currently our options are a brand new Sander (approx. ?850) & a similar secondhand cello.

We really don't want to spend more than ?1000 if possible, as we'll need to get a hardcase (1/8 cello got damaged by trumpet case) as it will be in school at least twice a week & we'll need to move up at some point in the next two to three years.

Also how important is a good bow & how much should we spend?

Any help gratefully received.

Is it possible to hire a decent instrument locally. The problem with this size cello is that it will soon need replacing, as 9 year olds have this habit of growing. We have had the same problem with my daughter who is now 14 has just moved into a full size and we need to buy pretty soon, but have hired the last 2 sizes.

P.S. I've just spoken to Beecher Acoustics in Oxford who were very helpful anyone used them previously?

I too have daughters who are small for their age but have done high grades early on the cello, so we bought them a beautiful french turn of the century cello. Cost ?2000 but gorgeous sound, daughter took grade 7 on it and at age 13 has only just grown out of it. may be up for sale soon if you are interested! has hard case.

Yes, hiring can be a really good option, especially for children who have got so far so fast. I have a couple of pupils who are doing this with violins at the moment. The other option is a shop that will buy back at the price you paid? although this is generally for the antique ones of course.
