Hi all

I'm new to this forum, hello biggrin.gif

I am interested in teaching maths, particularly to adults. I have a maths degree, and am extremely tired of working for money driven companies. I want a change in my life, so as oppose to applying for jobs in the public sector, to move away from the money making rat race, I came across some teaching jobs.

This interested me greatly, as i had thougt about being a teacher before, but never really researched about it.

Basically, can anyone advise me on how to get a certificate, or get training to teach adults maths.

Also, I am not really in a financial position to give up work and pursue this full time, if there is a part time or evening course or weekend course that anyone knows about i would be really grateful.

Thanks all for yor time. biggrin.gif

Erm... this is a MUSIC forum...

Best thing to do would be to find out where the nearest place is that you can do a PGCE; do your PGCE, and then apply for jobs at the local schools...

Yes this is a music forum, but we are all teachers so it is a good place to look!

You might try checking the government website that have been on all the adverts recently, you can do your PGCE alongside gaining classroom experience whilst being paid as a trainee teacher, there are also substantial bursaries available for maths teachers as they are struggling to fill the posts. all the details are on www.canteach.gov.uk.

Good luck

Yeah... sorry if I sounded a bit intimidating, I'm not usually like that [I think].

Great that you want to teach maths. There's a severe shortage of Maths teachers - there are even schools around that don't offer A-level Maths... it's shocking...

Most universities and colleges like you to have spent a short time in a school before you start your PGCE so it's a good idea to contact a local school or two to see if they'll let you go in and observe some lessons. Seeing for yourself is the best way of finding out if you really want to go into teaching. It's not the easiest job in the world but it can be very rewarding.

The majority of schools now have a professional mentor on the staff who'll have links with nearby training colleges and university education departments. Although they're usually pretty stressed at this time of year they'll generally be happy to arrange for you to visit their school. Just give the school a ring.
