It's been 20-odd years since I last played the cello, but I'm back with a vengeance and obsessing over it now laugh.gif I've got a lot of cobwebs to blow away, but Grade 6 is not as scary a prospect as I originally thought. I'm looking for a teacher (in Bath) at the moment, but in the meantime I'm using the Alexanian book to try and answer all those "how do I ...?" questions.

I remember my old teacher used to have a copy lurking around the place from time to time, and she'd refer to it every now and then or give me a hand-copied exercise (or ten!) to play. However, I'm finding the language very hard going, and his terminology for positions seems totally at odds to what I'm familiar with. 1st position, 4th position, 1/2 position etc - no problem - but I can't seem to equate these to Alexanian's "2nd degree of the 1st disposition" terms. Any ideas?

Any suggestions for studies or other self-paced methods, too? I've got Dotzauer's "40 Advanced Studies" and Feuillard's "Daily Exercises" as well as the ABRSM scales books, and I'm working on the Menuetts from Bach's 1st solo suite (from List A of Grade 6).

I feel my second plug of the day for http://www.musicteachers.co.uk (as recommended by Maggie) coming on . Sorry I don't know anything about cello positions though!
