BadStrad
Hi. I attended/performed at the Cardiff concert that LooneyTunes arranged a while back and really enjoyed the experience.

Recently I've been itching to get out there and have another go but there doesn't seem to be anything on the events board for Wales. So I was wondering how much interest there would be if I could get something together?

I know some people travel by train so I'd guess it would have to be somewhere along the railway - between Carmarthen and Cardiff, which handily pretty much follows the route of the M4 for drivers. biggrin.gif For my preference it would be at the Carmarthen end, but I realise it is way out west for most of civilisation!

I have no idea when or where or even if this is do-able, but I thought it was worth canvassing for interest.

Cheers.
scotliz
I certainly would be interested if it was near Cardiff. Swansea is also do-able for me.

I think that wherever forum events are held there will be an element of travel.

Interested, but Carmarthen would be just too far really for a day trip (4 hours train journey, just checked), and going away for a whole weekend is difficult. Could do Cardiff if the venue was walking distance from train station. Anything more than a 2.5 hour train journey is stretching it a bit for me.

That's roughly what I thought. Cardiff's around 2.5 hours away from me, so I figured it would be a useful mid point. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks Barry - I wasn't sure if LT was still reading the forums. Her status says last active in March and FB it's May. I didn't want to trouble her in case she's not well or really busy or something as she's been off line so long.

Thanks Barry. Maybe - if we decide to go ahead with this I could take over the admin if LT could book the same venue as last time? Do you think that would work? Or I could try and find somewhere closer to the station. - Any excuse for a trip to the violin shop. LOL!

Quite possibly, BadStrad. Leave it with me, I'll drop her a line and let you know smile.gif

Hello , I live west of Carmarthen ! I am endeavouring to play the piano and would welcome the opportunity to meet and hear other adult learner musicians . So much more fun than practicing on my own and something to look forward to .

lois
I'd be interested if it were closer to Cardiff smile.gif
fsharpminor
Id be interested in North Wales but not south , as there hasnt been a Chester one since Oct 2009

I would love attend something. If we have enough notice it would give me enough notice to plan things so that DrD could prepare something on his guitar (Classical) and give and opportunity to play the piano. I don't teach him guitar, but do teach him singing (he's a tenor), it would be good for him to get a chance to do some solo work, but like many of the others South Wales would suit us better, although we do have a friend further North we could stay with to make the journey more worthwhile. (Dboys can either go on sleepovers or stay with relatives, so much easier now they are that much bigger!)

(NB Cambridgeshire to Wales is definitely Cross Country, but have Car, will travel!)

Hmm - so South East Wales is looking the favourite.

I guess the next question is when? Obviously people want some notice, and this year seems to be racing past, so I'm thinking to get a reasonable notice period that would taking us too close to Christmas. After that the roads can be bad. So I'm wondering about March 2012?

Is that a good time? I know there was an April Cardiff event - but April is a busy month for me so later March would be better, but - as we're still canvassing opinions what do you guys think?

Thanks for the replies. I'm starting to think this could happen.

At risk of being accused of bullying or manipulation you may want to consider the Surrey Adult Learners concert in February.
I know that geographically it's not close but unless you are pretty certain of getting numbers locally (this will probably mean having local off forum interest) it's possible that you will need a significant number of people from out of the area in order to cover your costs. Except where cost are very low I think there have been very few event where at least half of the participants have been from out of the immediate area.
Similar events close together in time can mean people needing to choose one or the other because of calls on their time and/or not being able to prepare two performances in a short time.

The two Cardiff events have been probably amongst the most successful in attracting non-forum members.

Having said that, I'd probably only attend two of Egham - Cardiff - Glasgow if your event is in March. smile.gif

I'll say this.. you lot do get about..the milage is incredible..I do admire you all..

Good point - I should have checked what else was on around that time. DOH! But like I said - I'm asking for suggestions. Ta!
Blackbird77
Is there anything going on in May 2012 - wasn't sure if this clashes with any other forum events, plus if it was Cardiff any potential clashes with rugby matches etc - parking there is a nightmare at the best of times.

I'd be interested in a Cardiff event but Swansea is as far west as I could get to for an event.

Good luck with this BadStrad - is Gloucester too far out of the way for you?
scotliz
There will hopefully Gloucester event next year and I would prefer it to be May/June time. However, if there are various events then that is good and we can choose which we go to.

corenfa
Addendum to my previous vote of interest.. though I'm interested, I will very likely have to forgo any event from end Feb - 3rd week March as I probably won't be in the country.

Apart from scotliz's possible Gloucester do, I can't think of anything else. smile.gif

Don't worry I don't feel bullied or manipulated. OH would probably love a trip to Surrey as he used to live there, but the problem with going to Surrey is that it's around a million miles away from where we live. Even Cardiff is a flipping long way - but if I put on an event near me (so far west, next stop is the sea huh.gif ) I think I'd get about four takers and two of them would be off-forum. So Cardiff is a compromise based around where's near enough for people to get to from the west of England and south or west Wales. I guess it comes down (for me) to balancing the cost of a day trip to Cardiff and venue hire against an overnighter, probably two in Surrey.

I guess I need to start putting out venue feelers to get an idea of costs and do-ability.

Anyone know any cheap venues in Cardiff/Newport area?

With a good piano if you are going with the solo performances format where you need a good piano for pianists and for accompanied pieces.

And do check whether it will have been tuned. I budget for piano tuning for the Stalybridge event but if a piano will have been tuned within less than maybe 2 months you might be ok.
Better if you can get someone to check out the piano if at all possible. Sometimes someone's 'really good' piano would be best employed on November 5th.

Hmm, just checked the sports fixtures and guess what - March is 6 nations rugby! Blow! Oh well, April after all.

Hi smile.gif

I'm still very much around! biggrin.gif

Unfortunately, there are priorities other than music which have taken over my life outside of work, and I have taken a back seat on the concert organising front.

I'm happy to book the same venue as previously if others (Badstrad etc) are willing to sort out logistics? I'm sure that, with enough notice, I'll be able to mobilise the usual (local) suspects too! laugh.gif

Let me know by PM or email. I don't use FB very often and it's linked to an email address that I seldom use.....

Am up to my eye-balls busy for a couple of weeks, but I'll get in touch soon.

Thanks again.

I think we might just have an April forum event in Cardiff. Yeah! biggrin.gif

Great work, BadStrad - I take my hat off to you.

Put me down for a forum event in April in Cardiff, or any other time or venue in Wales party1.gif

I missed the last one, due to work commitments, so this is one I am determined not to miss.
