I asked a while back for advice about backpack straps and you were all really helpful. I have finally got to the point where I am going to order them. They are for a bassoon case and I don't know whether to get the violin ones or the cello ones (which I think will be too big although they both say they are adjustable).

So my question is can a few of you with rectangular violin cases with three points on the back for attaching straps send me the distance between the points. They will be laid out in a triangle and if you could give me the long and short sides of the triangle that would really help me to check how similar this case is.

Also if you could post the length of the strap as adjusted for use (so not the max and min, but the length that you use it at) that would help me to know which set to order.

If my points are slightly further apart and you use short straps at max length then I probably need to order the large size. It's very difficult to tell without actually seeing the straps as the (considerable) weight of the instrument will affect the position.

Thank you.

Ok I have a rectangular case

the distance from TOP point to bottom right (or left) is: 43cms
the distance between the two bottom ones (taken from middle of each metal D-ring and not from the smallest distance between them) is 14cms

my straps are 77cms in length adjusted how I like them, but I do wear my case on my shoulders quite high (so high the top of my case is a bit above my head!!! laugh.gif and bottom of my case a bit above my bottom)

Thanks, that is just the sort of info I need. biggrin.gif The measurements on the bassoon case are 44cm and 18cm, so very similar. I think that confirms that I can probably use violin straps.

Anyone else?

bear in mind that my 43 is from where my top D ring attaches (which is FIXED in a metal bolt) to where my bottom D ring is which is NOT fixed as the top one as it is in a textile fixing which has some 'room' for my D ring to move 'in there' so it can actually be 'up to' 43.5cm the measurement smile.gif

Thank you for your help. They adjust up to 80cm, so hopefully that will be enough. Maybe when she is fully grown I will have to get cello ones.

Andante, where did you order them from?
The strap on my daughter's cello case broke last week.

Can't help with straps, but I find that D-rings (carabinier) are often enough to overcome strap emergencies. The more expensive ones generally stay closed better under strain.

A while back the straps on my case were hurting me a bit, as they tended to bunch up and dig in. I thought I would have to get a new case and went to a local shop to have a look at them.

The man in the shop pointed out that the case was fine, and really all I needed were some new straps, they had quite a selection to choose from and I ended up with some wide padded neoprene ones. These have been great, also they were not too expensive party1.gif
