You know, just wondering. I mean like doubling instruments - I have two clarinets, for example, not like one flute, one piano etc, etc...

i have 2 violins-my nice one and a cheap one i take to school.

i have 2 clarinets and 2 saxophones and lots of others!

Got 4 pianos... 3 upright, 1 grand and I'm renting another grand in my "weekday residence"

I no longer play on the uprights, but I wouldn't get much selling them so I prefer to keep them.

I own lots of instruments, but only one of each!

4 violins (but about to sell one of them... I only play one of them, the others have no strings!)
2 pianos (one upright one grand)
2 violas (one is a violin strung up as a viola lol)
1 horn
about 20 recorders
6 guitars (shared in my family)
1 harmonium
1 spinet
2 trumpets (my brother's, but I play them too)
2 cellos (ditto trumpets, selling one of these soon)
1 cornet and 1 pocket cornet (ditto trumpets)
1 drum kit (ditto trumpets)
1 bass guitar (ditto trumpets)
1 electric keyboard (ditto trumpets)

2 flutes - one metal c flute, and one wooden one that is very hard to get a sound out of....

* I can't play these, the digeridoo and the pan pipes are mine, and the guitar and mandolin are my Dad's.

I'm have a mere two flutes and multiple recorders, thjough some of those are my sisters played by me, and some of those she has "stolen" and taken back to uni with her!

And Nikki, how can you not be able to play the pan pipes when its the same blowing technique as a flute combined with the 'fingering' (I use the term lightly) of a harmonica...

Talking of which I forgot the multiple harmonica's in the house...

not hugely. most of them were given to me by friends or family who didn't play them any more. i don't know where a lot of them came from actually.

I can play it, I meant just have never had lessons and just got it as a present, and don't know about the fingering. I can get a sound out of it, but haven't got the technique to go with it

One flute (soon to be joined/replaced by another) and two recorders. I had a clarinet but sold it years ago. Also had a set of pan pipes (all the way from Bolivia) but sat on them! They were cool. Ah well.

That's actually hurt me quite a bit you know. I know I keep coming back to this thread and I'm sorry about that, but this has rattled me. You don't know me and, if you don't mind me saying so, you don't know what I'm capable of. I devote more time to music than I do to my other education and socialising put together. Music IS my life, and the reason I play so many instruments is to give me a bit of variety in it. I don't spread my time equally between my instruments, so it allows me to focus more on the ones I'm better at. And I don't take up new instruments until I have reached a level I deem satisfactory on my other instruments (generally about Grade 5ish). I have worked so hard to balance my practice time and my homework time and it leaves me almost no time to socialise, but it means that I can perform to the best of my ability in music and my other education. So someone coming along and saying I can't be at a decent standard hasn't exactly got me jumping for joy.

What, may I ask, for you, is a decent standard? If you're asking for diplomas on all my instruments, then I'm sorry, I'm not a decent player in that case. But, to be totally honest, anyone with eight diplomas at my age would probably be famous. I doubt anyone has heard of me.

I take my music very very seriously. If I thought that playing eight instruments was hindering my progress on my main instrument (violin), I would drop the other seven immediately, no question. Likewise, if I ever feel it's getting too much, I'll drop everything except violin, voice and piano. (I don't have lessons on the others; I am self-taught. Maybe that makes me a bad musician. I don't know. Do I care? Yes, I do. But this is only one person's opinion so I'm just not going to let it bother me until other people make the same statement.)

I'm not going to lower myself enough to quote my past list of qualifications (in any case, they've been posted enough times in the forums if you'd care to search them out and look at them, although I'm sure you have better things to do with your time) but please, please, please don't patronise me. Or anyone else for that matter.

I expect this will probably all be moderated out, which is probably a good thing, because I don't usually get this hysterical. Although I'm not apologising now, I will apologise later.

If universities are making offers to people like me, who are "obviously not at a decent standard", then all I can say is "what is the world of music coming to?".

Anyone who can play as many instruments as you, at any level, has got to be mega talented. Cambridge obviously agree. And, no, you don't need a piece of paper to prove that you've reached a "decent standard", whatever that means. Versatility is a great thing. The more instruments the better, I say!
