Hi, I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on whether you need to know italian terms from all grades 1-5 when coming to the exam for grade 5 theory or whether you just need to know the terms that are in the grade 5 workbook? If anyone could help I would be really grateful,
Thanks

Hi Lisa,

In my opinion if you are familiar with the terms found in the AB Guide to Theory Bk. 1 you should be in good shape for Grade 5 Theory. Of course, other terms may appear on the test, but the list in the AB Guide should give you the most common ones that would serve you well for the exam.

For grade 5 theory tou need to know everything from the previous grades as well as what is in the Grade 5 workbook.
This is the same for all grades...... the syllabus says 'as in preceding grades, with the addition of:' wink.gif

It depends how well you want to do in the exam.

I encountered a French(!) term in mine (it was the 2003 B paper, did anyone get it?). Italian terms and terms from various languages are included, but only a couple and they're only worth a couple of marks. Italian will probably help with composition as well.

If you just want to pass and you've got better things to do, then don't stress out over foreign terms. If you want a distinction, then learn the kind-of-common ones (e.g. cantabile, marcato, alla marcia, schnell).

Realistically, not many are tested, so don't stress out over them. If you can do the rest of the paper, you'll be fine.

Good luck!

I agree, I haven't done grade 5 theory yet but, they are only a couple of marks, if you really don't know them leave it but you should guess because you might be right, on my grade 3 theory exam I guess a word and I got it right! Don't worry about them afterall, THEY ARE ONLY 2 MARKS!

If you know all the terms you come across in the music you play that it will help quite a lot.
In earlier theory grades its fairly unusual to be asked anything which is not commonly used.

This is a rather old thread blink.gif. When I first saw it on the list of topics I thought 'why on earth does Christine Morris want to know if she has to learn Itallian terms' laugh.gif.

Oh but those couple of marks can be sooooo important. My best friend and I sat the same G5 theory paper back in the late 80s - I got the Italian term right getting full marks, she got it wrong loosing 2 marks.......boy did that cause tension. (we're talking again now though!)

That's what I was thinking! biggrin.gif I think it was me that started the thread (not sure as it was so long ago) but why has Christine posted it again & as quotes? blink.gif

I was wondering the same....

I could never be bothered to learn the Italian terms, I still managed to walk out of it with a distinction so to me they don't really matter all that much.

Maybe it's because it was in the early days of the forum and Christine wanted to move the thread and hadn't worked out how to do it at the time unsure.gif. Just guessing though....

Just realised the year was 2003 so it can't have been my post as I only joined around this time last year! biggrin.gif I did post a similar topic just before my grade 5 theory exam just before November last year though....

Anyway, I think italian , french and german should be asked in the examination but only the important ones.
