has anyone played the music for the show Bugsy malone - our school is doing a production and im in the band - im not sure about the music though i sounds a bit dreary really - is it meant to sound boorin or is it our playing style?

I was musical director when our school did it in 2001 (I was in year 13). The music's mostly good though there are some rather dull ones (So you wanna be a boxer, Down and Out and My Name is Tallulah). Its mostly upbeat with some slow ones. Theres a beautiful slow ballad called 'Ordinary Fool' which i think is the best song. Some of the orchestrations are pretty odd (especially the overture!!!)
Hope you enjoy it!

I recorded the piano versions for my mum's primary school's production. The opening piece (Bugsy Malone) is written in straight time; it has to be swung, and is in the film, or it will sound incredibly dull! I'll see if I swung any of the other pieces too if you like.

I played in the band for last year's production. It was good I really enjoyed it! We had a clarinet (me) and alto and a flute (who was playing the trumpet part transposed) What are you playing?? I preferred playing in Bugsy to playing in Grease, which I did a couple of years ago!

That's one of those 'does my behind look big in this' questions!! I'm sure the music isn't meant to sound boring, maybe you guys need to get out with some splat guns and find your inner gangsters wink.gif

I've only seen the film version but the songs are generally not that boring (though Tallulah's number goes on for a bit).

Good luck!

my friend played a few of them a few years ago. "my name is tallulah" was the only one she hated.

and they're better than the songs from Summer Holiday which my school is doing this year! mad.gif

I really enjoyed it when we did it! I was playing the alto sax part, of which half was 2nd clarinet so i had to transpose it! "In the Midnight hour" next isnt it elmo?!

my school are doing bugsy malone in the summer too!

apparently there's no horn part as the version we have is the jazz band set up. dry.gif

i get to play the piano part instead tho. is it really hard? my sight reading isnt too good and i dont want to make a fool of myself in front of everyone!

If you play from a vocal score, it's ok, coz I was sightreading some of that for the fun of it! But I think the actual piano part's a lot harder. An absolute genius of a boy when it comes to all things musical (and I'm not exageratting!) in the year below me was playing for it as well, and he struggled to sight read some of it. That could've been the dodgy font that it was written in though! Or coz he wasn't paying attention half the time wink.gif Try it! It's fun!

I'd love to play in a show. Our school is holding auditions for Grease and they want me to be in the chorus but I'm so busy... And violas aren't required in the band mad.gif

our school did a rubbish production of that. i played sax in it but it was only like 3 days notice that they wanted music so it wasnt much!

I also ended up being the stupid jibbering musician who is questioned in the play! I was not amused at that. And they made us really short dresses, but we wernt just a pit band, oh no, they put us at the side of the stage! indecent...
