I was wondering if there were any resources or what people use to prepare for this part of the exam. Should I study scores, aspects of periods or are there any books that give a good grounding in this part of the test.

I haven't gone beyond grade five theory because I feel I lack the knowledge to really do well in this section.

The questions are sentences with missing words which is easier than the previous format where you really did have to do some analysis.
you need to know the harmonic vocabulary for the grade as well as have an understanding of various scores (orchestral/choral/piano/small ensemble). You have to know transposing instruments and their transposing intervals as you won't be told the answer as you are at grade 5. you need to understand about modulations. I found that lots of experience was very useful for me. I think that an orchestral or band player can have an advantage here if they've had the chance and the interest to look beyond their own part.

Hi,

I felt exactly the same as you when I was deciding whether to do Grade 6, - and even posted a similar post asking for help.

In the end, I found that doing lots of past papers really helped, and ended up getting 45/50 for questions 4 and 5. I have just done Grade 7, but found the transition from Grade 5 to Grade 6 the hardest.

Good luck!

Hi Louise13,

nice reply

I just did grade 6 in March and got 48/50 for the last two questions. I'm curious about how you found the jump between 6 and 7 as I'm preparing to sit 7 in Oct.

Oh, and in answer to the OP, JonathanM, ABRSM publishes a wonderful workbook for each grade of theory...
They take you step-by-step through the questions, teaching you how to think through the problems and analyze possible answers... Very Helpful
I think its called "Theory Workbook" with the grade specified below.

Best wishes!!!
