I have two questions regarding the pieces in the Grade 1 Piano syllabus - I know that repeats are not to be included. Does this include 1st and 2nd time bars too? Without these, one of the pieces is very very short. Also one of the pieces uses the term 'rf'. I have never come across this, and I have yet to find anyone else who has come across this. Apparently, it means 'reinforced' - therefore, how does one play reinforced?

my teacher always used to cross out the 1st time bars so i don't think you have to play them. i havn't done any pieces with repeats for a long time though.

A bit less than a '>'.
Sort of lean on it, make it slightly prominent.

I always thought that if there were different first and second time bars then the repeats would be needed (otherwise surely one gets out of learning a bar of the piece...). I don't have much experience though so can't give you a definite answer: playing them would be on the safe side, the worst thing that can happen is that the examiner can stop the performance (which won't happen unless the exam is going to over run a lot).

I never play the 1st time bars in exams. My teacher just crosses them out

I feel that both bars should both be played as the second time bar isn't simply a repeat of the first.
Having said that, I was waiting with a young candidate a few years ago for her turn to enter the exam room. The previous cadidate's playing was highly audible and of course we listened with interest as some of the chosen pieces were the same. We listened as one of the pieces was galloped through in a matter of seconds and we waited for more................but no......there it finished. Only a second time bar at the end and that was it.

It seemed so short and as if the piece wasn't complete, as if it had stopped half way through.
First and second time bars do not imply the same as 'repeat' bar lines.......do they?
