Full Version: Composition software and keyboards for a child

Hi all,

My daughter has been busy over the holidays composing short pieces on the piano and I would really like to get them put on a score before she forgets them as they are coming thick and fast and she'll never remember them all! biggrin.gif

It will also be nice for her when she is older as she will have a record of what she made up.

She does it all by guesswork/ear/improvisation, kind of on the fly piano.gif so I am assuming that the best route forward will be to get a midi keyboard and buy either Sibelius student or Sibelius first so she can play her piece and then it makes a score.

Is there anything that I should know or anyone can advise on? I am aware of free music software (as there have been threads on the subject) but I am a bit lost with the whole thing. As her theory is way behind her playing she must play the piece to get it onto a score so will need a larger keyboard 66 keys or even an 88. I heard that Sibelius is not easy but I could help her with that part. I also noticed on The avid web site they sell theory and aural software training "Auralia and Musition". Has anyone ever used it?

Thanks

I have used Finale Songwriter and if you want to do basic stuff I have got on OK with that. You can enter notation by hand or play in by midi from you keyboard ( I stick with by hand as I have no idea what by midi means!!!!!!)
