I'm doing this piece too. My problem is that I can only play it really well without the music. I don't usually memorise pieces but when I started playing this I was having problems with the jumps so my teacher suggested I memorised the first section, but I went ahead & memorised it all. Thing is I thought in the exam I could play fom memory but with the music open as a safety net. Unfortunately have just found out that I can't play it when the music is there even if I'm trying not to look at it.
OK you all say - so play it with the book closed, but I know nerves will affect me really badly in the exam and I might simply freeze up. My teacher doesn't know what I should do - play it badly ( in my mind) with the music or take a chance of playing it really well without.
Anyone's thoughts on this would be appreciated.

ive memorised the second section as i found i couldnt read the big jumps in the LH and the accidentals in the RH at the same time! although i dont find looking at the music that much of a problem. its just practice.

andy- try to decide on the how you're going to play it in the exam (memory, book open etc) and just practice constantly, maybe get an audience an play to them and then you can see if your memory holds! biggrin.gif

I kinda know how you feel, I usually have my pieces memorised for exam, but the last one I went into suddenly I looked up at the music and forgot everything and stopped in the middle. Bit disconcerting but got there in the end.

I suggest you concentrate on trying to play the piece through with the music and get used to it being there even if you don't need it.

How long is it till your exam?
Andy-piano-flute
2weeks & 6 days till the exam.
Uberzoldat: I think that's what I do - I look up & catch sight of the music & my brain doesn't link it up with what I'm playing - then I stop. I think I'm going to practise it only with the book open even if I'm trying not to look at it & see if I can get used to that.

Do you have the cd? if you do, listen to it and follow with the music so you can get used to knowing what part of the pieces is on what line etc.. so you don't suddenly read something and forget what you're playing (like i did!) biggrin.gif If you dont have the cd, let me know i might be able to help. smile.gif

No I don't have the cd for the grade pieces this time - so actually don't know what they should sound like when someone really good plays them!
