I've inherited a student who is using book two of this series (not Me and My Piano but the books for older children). I've not encountered these books before and I'd be grateful for feedback from any teachers/students who have used these books - strengths, weaknesses, whether you liked the repertoire & exercises etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

I'm currently trying out Waterman's Piano Lessons vol 1 on three new pupils (6-7 year olds), and so far I (and they) like it. I prefer this version to the me and my piano books as they are less babyish and there are fewer distracting picutures. One thing I've noticed is that there is a lot of material in each chapter and it's a bit difficult to skip bits; but my impression is that if you cover all the material they will gain considerable knowledge in relatively short time. The homework suggestions (daily exercises) are very good if you have a cooperative parent to work with!

I'd agree that these books are excellent for the more serious minded student who is happy to work on technique and use quality music to do so. If your pupil is content then there is no reason to move away from it but you could supplement with jazzier repertoire occasionally and balance their music making to include some playing by ear, extemporising and composition activities.

To be honest, I find this series quite dated, although of its time it was probably ahead of many of the other tutors on the market! I do think that the pages are too busy, and there is too much information for most students - certainly of this age group.

Many thanks for the helpful replies, all of which tend to reinforce my own initial impressions. I think I'll proceed cautiously with the book but be ready to leave out some of the piece and suplement extra material where necessary.

I like these books because I'm really keen on exercises and using little studies. However, they are quite serious and the pieces are all classsical and a bit dry! I usually have a couple of other books of lighter pieces to use alongside them.
