Hi!

I finished my grade 5 theory exam about an hour ago.

I thought I would make a thread where we could post our answers, so we could compare our answers and get a rough idea of how we did, given that results take 6 weeks dry.gif

Here are my answers (from what I can remember!):

Question 1)
Time signatures: 7/4 and 3/2

Question 3)
molto moderato e grazioso: very much moderately and graceful
sf: forced, accented
down bow

Ornament: turn

Chords:
X: Ib
Y: Vb
Z: IIc

Instruments:
Melody of the piano is played again by the VIOLIN at the start of bar 9.
Violin is a member of the STRINGS family, another family is BRASS, lowest member is the TUBA.

Scales:
Gminor melodic: i had a F double sharp and E sharp

Cadences:
1) IV 2) I 3) II 4) V 5) I

Sorry if some of it doesn't make sense! I only posted the questions which have written answers.

Please post your own answers!

Thanks, and all the best to everyone,

I didn't take the exam however - is the same exam used in different time zones eg. US and Asia? ie. will anyone who has not taken the same exam be able to see these? sorry if I'm being too paranoid smile.gif in which case please ignore.

Er ...... not very easy to give answers without having sight of the exam paper. wacko.gif

Gibraltar is next Wed as it's half term here....

I never liked comparing answers after exams... although Question 1 time signatures - I opted for 6/4 rather than 3/2 as the minims were dotted and tied to suggest two beats to the bar... but then again I could be wrong...

So is 6/4 right?:S that's what I wrote... Soooo annoyed I put up bow instead of down bow mad.gif

I Can't get over the relief of having such a nice performance direction question biggrin.gif
I put 6/4 too, I thought the violin played the melody from bar 8, but I'm just glad it's over and it wasn't as difficult as some of the past papers I had done at home. It took me ages to answer the first question and I thought my brain would explode counting dotted semi quavers laugh.gif

Ha ha - yeah - started trying to count in quavers and kept keeping completely lost. Switched to counting the demi-semis @ 32/bar.

Yay! Don't feel so bad about it now! Yes I put bar 8 aswell in the end. And the first question really confused me! wacko.gif so I counted 16 semi quavers per bar and that calmed me down a little bit! Good luck with your results!

G# melodic?

I chose 7/4 6/4 for question 1

one of the bars 6/4 showed a dotted minim tied to a crotchet followed by 2 crotchets in the bar.

oh the one about the instruments,
it started on bar 8.. I thought it was 9 but I had to look carefully.

hehe, Im here correcting.. but I made mistakes..

I put molto as fairly
I put up bow in stead of down bow
and I put Sforzando for Sf

What did everyone think of the composing a melody to words?
MarkP
Not a lot... so I wrote a little ditty for cello... Not sure it was all that musical, but I think the cadences were okay and I got lots of dynamics, phrasing, tempo and a couple of other bits in.

G# melodic?

G minor melodic would have had Bb, Enatural and F# for and ascending scale and F natural, Eb and Bb for a descending scale.

G# minor would have had G# A# B C# D# E# F double sharp and G# going up.

My daughter did her's G5 theory yesterday too and could not get a word from her about how was it :-( .... It was her first time taken the Theory test tho !
Please advise was it a reasonable or quite hard paper when comparing it with last few years' past papers ?

Well having done the past theory papers for practice.. it seemed almost the same 0,0
MarkP
Very similar to the 2010 papers. Surprisingly similar actually - I expected something a little more tricky.
Clari Nicki1
I think it was an easy, straight forward paper! It had SATB! And the performance directions were easy!
Piano Pupil
one concern i have is about the SATB:

if there is a crotchet rest in both the soprano and alto clefs in the open score, when you are to write it in short score, do you write 2 crotchet rests or just 1?

I wrote 1 mellow.gif

Thanks

Yes just 1.

I wondered about that too and just put the one crotchet rest. Phew!
