I play piano, trumpet & drums and am teaching myself the bass guitar but does anyone have any suggestions of a different kind of instrument that's relatively easy to pick up and is slightly unusual....hmmmmmmm?

hmmm I don't think harp or organ counts as "relatively easy to pick up" though... (certainly both quite heavy....)
ocarina??
Violin or Harp...but then, I am biased as I've just started to learn both!!

Don't want to rani on your parade, but i'd master the 4 you're playing now instead of rushing onto a 5th.

If your taking up something new it has to be an unusual instrument, because you have a better chance of being good because on normal instruments people have been learning since they were little. What about the double bass it's relatively similar to the bass guitar with fingering etc or the basson or bass clarinet just some suggestions.........

I cant resist re-posting..
Like I said, dont go rushing off on new instruments. That clearly shows you have no interest in any of the ones you currently play. Now before you jump out of your seat at me

think about it.
You play 4 instruments. It takes aaggggees to master ONE! And you want to move ON TO 5? I've been teaching/playing jazz a while, and I would love to take up saxophone. I'm not even going to think about holding one, until I have got significantly further on in my Jazz Journey..and even that will never end.
It's just a little bothering, thats all, that you want to get to #5 without properly doing 1-4. Spend another 20 years playing them and then think of a 5th

I would have said flute or clarinet but neither of those is very unusual. What about a soprano sax? It's much rarer than an alto or a tenor.

OK now you're getting on my nerves...
Who are you to tell me I have no interest in the instruments I already play and I have practically mastered them anyway and I love playing them all to bits...
I'm just saying there are so many instruments out there and so little time...

Why don't you learn to play the larynx

?
It costs nothing, goes everywhere with you, and opens up a whole hemisphere of musical experience and opportunities which are closed to other instrumentalists. Plus if you learn to sight sing it is bound to improve your musicality on existing instruments.

Your logic doesn't make sense. Please explain how because someone wants to take on a new instrument it clearly shows (CLEARLY?) that they have no interest in those that they already play.
It does not show that to me let alone "clearly". It shows he/she wants to expand their interest or become more versatile.
Thanks if you can explain.

I think if you want 2 play a new instrument thats great!!!
If someone tells you that you can't beacuse you already play a couple then ignore them! I play flute, oboe, sax, clarinet and piano (grade8 on sax, oboe, flute and grade5 on piano and clarinet). My music teacher at first refused 2 let me borrow the school sax coz she said I already played flute and oboe. Now I have grade8 play in nywo on it and hoping 2 study sax as principal instrument at music college.
You want 2 learn something unusual - the digeredoo!!(yes I can't spell!)
or baritone sax - tht makes a fantastic sound!
