That's my beloved old violin (yes Talulabelle if anyone remembers her!) that he's so very unconvincingly 'playing'! biggrin.gif

How did she get into films?
ffliwt
Her outstanding beauty and talent for acting of course!

Nah, BBC asked the shop to borrow a violin right at the time i was trading her in for Anastasia, so off she went smile.gif She's now safely back in the shop - i played her last week smile.gif

BTW i mean the tv series thats just started back - not the movie in the cinema!

How cool was that.
I know what you mean about the playing. Still at least he had her on his shoulder - an improvement on series one.

True - though i did notice that 1 moment he has a shoulder rest on... the next time he plays, doesnt... next time does... haha Perhaps he's experimenting with his set up wink.gif wink.gif

And at one point he appeared to be tuning the E string to a Bb - presumably they'd loosened the strings off so he didn't bust one cranking the pegs about....
ilovemycello
Also he plucks an open string and it's a low D (below middle C), i.e. viola range...how he managed to get that on a violin I don't know! It certainly wasn't the best miming I've seen... laugh.gif

As an ex string player I find the bowing annoying - so out of sync with the recording. But I do like Sherlock as a series. Best thing on TV over the Christmas/New Year period.
Sunrise
Oh wow, that's cool! I love sherlock, but can't watch the miming!!

Was terrible wasn't it, even non violinists would be baffled looking at it. A clear 'new bow' and yet his bow is barely moving, or two seperate notes whilst he bow is slowly shakingly moving in one direction! Consdering it's a great programme with great acting, youd have thought theyd spend more time getting that right!
lottie
It was APPALLING!!!! ohmy.gif laugh.gif Even my non-string playing hubby thought it was awful. All out of sinc.

Let's all write to the BBC? A programme with such a high profile SHOULD have taken expert advice - do they think we're all idiots?

As a non-string player, I found it annoying!

I'm not at all doubting she's a brilliant violin and teacher
But
...how can she be proud, of THAT?! it kind of looks so fake that it seems like its intended to be so!

Yes it's quite the worst musical miming I've ever seen in a quality TV show - and the violin noise is so clearly recorded in a resonant studio not in a densely furnished flat!

Oh yes and his bow was over-tightened - it made my toes curl, our old youth orchestra conductor would have said "who do you think you are - Robin Hood?"

LOL!!!!

He's clearly not at all musical if he can't even get the bow moving in time...

What an innocent I am, I just assumed the modern Sherlock was being presented as not very good at violin!!

It might not be completely Benedict Cumberbatch's (Sherlock's) fault - yes he plays very unconvincingly and unnaturally (laugh.gif) but it might have also been the producers cutting and using the parts badly... hence the bow moving at completely different times to the music laugh.gif
katemorrisviolin
We watched Sherlock last night, the "acting" with the violin was so appauling it made us laugh! He made no effort at all, which is puzzling as the rest of this actor's performance was superb. Why not bother with that partiular aspect of the role? Or maybe the sound editor is an idiot!
Now I can forgive Robert Downey Junior's film Sherlock torturing his violin sounding like a strangled cat! At least that was deliberate!
