Disappointing compared with the more recent film. Hardly a mention of his Symphonies or his association with his other 'Alice' in London

I didn't see the programme, but this would have been viewed as rather shocking in 1962, and with VW quite recently deceased (1958) might have been thought a bit of a slur on his memory, and perhaps on Alice herself.

Apart from the Sea Symphony, VW's symphonies have never been as popular as his shorter pieces. They don't seem to be performed very often.

It's always good to see the early work of Ken Russell though. It was much more a picture of Elgar's life rather than a detailed account of his music, and in that way it worked well.

Ken Russells film about Delius (A Song of Summer) is being shown again next week , but I think its late on Tuesday. Will check and repost. This one is regarded by many as his best composer film
