Full Version: Ornaments in Piano Grade 4 A:2 Scherzo

Hello all,

I have been teaching piano now for a few years and I'm always unsure of whether playing ornaments will give you a better mark or not, so I want to clear this up once and for all...

I have a pupil doing the Scherzo (A:2) for his piano exam this time round and he can't get the ornaments right at all. Can he just leave them out or will he get marked down for not putting them in?

Thank you

In the lower grades examiners are happy to accept
performances without ornaments (although they will not be able to
award the highest marks), providing that other musical aspects, such
as phrasing and dynamics, have been given consideration.

The above is quoted from These Music Exams. It also says that it is Grade 6 and above that pieces containing ornaments should only be chosen if the pupil can do them without disrupting the flow of the music.
