Does anyone have/know where I can find a list of all musical terms and descriptions needed for the last test in grade 8 aural?

Also, any tips for spotting modulations? I'm a bit confused because the syllabus makes it unclear what you may get asked. I know from major it can be relative minor, dominant minor, subdominant or dominant. But from minor, I'm unsure what I may be asked.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

There's a series of books for each grade called the Aural Test Survival Books which have a glossary and lots of other useful hints and tips. I think they're really good and not too expensive either.

Just brush up on terms up to grade 5 theory level, that should be fine; and use the aural books
as a guide. In general, it seems as though they're quite lenient with aural, so don't stress - rather focus energy on the pieces, scales and sight reading. Aural skills should be developed over time and not crammed the week before the exam (- um, like I did! smile.gif )

My students have found the Improve your Aural series of books with CDs (a Faber publication) to be invaluable. Grades 7 and 8 come in the same book and they both teach and test - you download the answers from the internet - they give you the site.

Listen, listen, listen is my advice! The more you hear modulations, the more you get to know what they are.

My singing teacher played aural tests every lesson for ages to make sure I got the 'feel' for the modulations. (Dominant as 'brighter', sub-dominant as 'sadder' etc.) And I was right in the exam, even though I wasn't sure.

Improve Your Aural is great. Some of the other books don't have answers in, which isn't helpful, but you could always get them to practice at home, and then get your teacher to check your answers (or if you're really crazy, work them out from the sheet music, which is what I did!).

Do you have a copy of the Specimen Aural Tests book? It doesn't give a list of the terms you can use but in the back of the book there are suggestions for answers for the last test which will give you a good idea of what's required.

For the modulations of which there are two in the exam. For the one in a major key it'll modulate to dominant, subdominant or relative minor. For the minor key one it'll be dominant (major or minor, but you're only required to specify dominant), subdominant, and relative major.

I haven't tried the Survival books but they sound useful.
