Eleanor
I was doing a practice paper on transposition and beside a note there was a bracket. The bracket contains a sharp. What am I going to do when I transpose the sharp ? Should I put it in a bracket ? Or ...... Can someone please tell me. smile.gif smile.gif

Yes, I'd put whatever the transposed symbol is - flat or natural or whatever - in a bracket too.

Now repeat after me

"The only silly question is one that isn't asked"

and do keep asking anything you need to know. Teachers love questions!

Hello Eleanor

The transposed note should also have a corresponding accidental, whichever that is. Is this an AB exam paper you are working through? If so, which one?

Rosemary.

I'm doing G5 2003. I think. wink.gif

The sharp was probably just a reminder, either of the key signature or an earlier accidental.

Please tell me you mean 20/03, otherwise if you are taking it in 2003, you need a time machine handy.

Helen, didn't we establish you had a time machine at some point?

I was hoping the OP would return to comment or give date details but no, so I will leave it to rest now.
Eleanor
Sorry, I did not notice this.......... for a long time....
Well, it is practice paper G5 2003.. The B part......
Thank for the helpful information, Rhaps....
Eleanor
By the way, what is "the OP" ?
Rosemary
Hello Eleanor

OP = original poster (I think!) ie - you!

In the 2003 paper you're looking at question 5 on page 14 are you? Do you mean the final note? B flat?

To be truthful, I'm not sure why that note need be bracketed. I've just transposed it down a minor third and it will be a G. There aren't that many accidentals when you've transposed it because the B flats become G naturals and the A flats become F naturals etc.

I wouldn't have thought it was necessary to include the bracket in the transposed version. It's misleading when you are answering a question like that in an exam because it makes you think you've missed something!

Rosemary.
