Hello everyone!
I was wondering whether anyone here is singing in a barbershop chorus? It comes from America and is four-part a cappella singing (all-girls and all-boys choruses). My school luckily offers it (although I'm in Germany) and I also sing in a quartet. You sing jazzy stuff and also stuff aranged for a cappella, like "One Fine Day" or "It's Raining Men", which we're singing at the moment!
Anyone here doing it (I know there are a few Americans around)?

I don't know if anyone's going to say yes, July, but you absolutely must keep it up! I don't think we hear enough barbershop quartets in Britain; they are great fun - dare I say much nicer than English Madrigals *scuttles for cover*

I used to do a bit of barbershop with the choir at school. Great fun!

We used to have a boys one at school, till they became too cool for it! We had one for when we went to "The Hexham Gathering" last year. Even though we sang some songs from a barbershop book, we mainly sang 4 part folk, and there was only 4 of us! But we never perfromed anywhere! I entered with some of my friends as a quartet for a festival near us and really enjoyed it.

Oh dear - people are always misinterpreting titles round here...
I really love barbershop and am definitely going to keep it up but am worrying about the time when I'll be at uni in England. Do you know any where they offer Barbershop singing?

If all else fails, you will probably be able to find others who are interested and start up your own group.

I hope so! It takes lots of time before you "grow together" as a quartet and blend/respond well to the other members. There's also often the trouble of finding a bass (Barbershop uses male terminology), or low alto, as at least at my school there are not many girls that can sing that low.
I sing tenor (the highest part).

I would love to, but I know I'm not talented/experienced enough yet. (Notice I put the "yet" on the end of that, so I'm not running myself down here!)
If it's all girls is it called a "Salon Quartet"?

I'm not sure - we don't call it that! The girls' chorus is called "Sweet Adelines" though, while the boys' chorus is the one officially called Barbershop!
I hope you get a chance to sing in a quartet/chorus Amber! It's so much fun!

I'd love to, and I'd love to be good enough to!

I would love to join a female barbershop or 'Sweet Adelines' but unfortunately where I live, we might as well be in the dark ages *sniff*

Oh that's a shame! Where do you live?
And Amber: Of course you'd be good enough! All you need is a good ear to hear that you're in tune with the others and some group spirit. It's essential that you can rely on the rest of your quartet and that they can rely on you too! And of course, as with all things, if you love what you're doing the audience will love your performance!

I live on Britain's most easterly point in Suffolk (england) which, sadly, is the only thing it's got going for it.

Oh dear! Well, how old are you? You could maybe escape to uni? I'm coming back to England for uni next year!

sadly not, I'm 20 (and working full time) and I'm stuck in this town for the foreseeable future, although I would like to go to Uni one day.

So much ambition.......so little time

Hey,barbershop is really cool!

Where do you live, pianist_1210? And what kind of songs are you singing at the moment?
